Some selected stats to complement this excellent thread:
- Lowest itl for attacks centrally
- 2nd lowest itl for shot % outside of box
- Midtable for OutBox and PenArea shots despite 3rd itl for total goals (big 6yd/SP bias)
BONUS - lowest LHS shots itl

Dropping this statline against someone with winter fuel allowance is *crazy*

Bayern had a goal disallowed for a no-arms block on the GK yesterday.

Mr Jover, I come bearing awful news from the European front

11/ Does… does Martin Samuel… think teams don’t bring all their players back for corners…? I agree with the sentiment of “don’t just give up cause youre small” – see Leo Trossard blocking vs Palace and to an extent David Raya – but *fuck me* we cannot be this reductive.
December 8, 2024 at 12:11 PM
10/ If this needs saying, then quite frankly the league has bigger problems. Staying with your man at all costs makes it sound like Martin's aiming for a Bielsan approach to set-pieces.

9/ See case photos. No further point needed.

8/ You have to be proactive to get into the space in front, but again, the space behind is available, and the square-on set-up + no actual contact means you're liable to get pushed ~wherever~. SHU went m2m last season too: got chewed. Answers that play into AFC's physical adv. *do not fly*
December 8, 2024 at 12:11 PM
7/ Funniest one, for me. Tight m2m, with only maybe 2/3 zonals is *literally* what WHU did and they should've conceded 3-4 first half alone. What's more, no wrestling means you are putting yourself into a physical fight but removing your only weapon?
December 8, 2024 at 12:11 PM
5/ I weirdly don't hate this. But what this does is again bring forward the argument of reactivity vs proactivity when defending AFC. I don't have an answer there, but this is such a reliable mechanism that AFC can easily engineer a +1 front post

4/ Having these figures makes sense from a general POV, but this is like running to Abbey Road and telling them they 'need to check out guitars'.

The second point is smart, and an extension of the 'don't mark your own GK' idea that teams (e.g. City) have used - smart way to avoid a wasted man
December 8, 2024 at 12:11 PM
3/ Martin I hate to say this buddy, but teams do this. A lot. In fact, look at Man Utd: Maguire + MdL are unarguably Utd's best aerial defenders and get nowhere near the ball due to the nature of the structure + movement around them.
December 8, 2024 at 12:11 PM
2/ Kai goes shoulder to shoulder and and dips behind, using the aggressive 'following' of the opposition to earn himself about 5 yards behind. Tbf, it is "Twink Burnley" but I think this gets a big fat "Not sure about that one chief".
December 8, 2024 at 12:11 PM
1/ So. Uh. Hm. I think this idea actually makes it *easier* to get slipped past. See in the follow-up tweet, but being shoulder-to-shoulder means you're in much more of an 'open' state to being got at both ways. Since AFC have good takers, that's very very possible too
December 8, 2024 at 12:11 PM
Oh look, Utd being hit in the same gap between zonal sets! Good thing they hired that defensive set piece coach that they won’t let do anything

14/ This is where Arsenal are at now. They can be adapted to, but it takes a constantly refining process to keep them out. Add in the growing threat of Merino (excellent front post), and Cala (also), and teams may soon be running off hopes and prayers to survive.

END OF 🧵
December 3, 2024 at 7:01 PM
13/ You only need to look back 4 days to see why teams get scared of it. Sporting go aggressively zonal, and lose half their team to one deep cross. AFC can sit behind and hold their ground. Those are *his* type of headers, so it's wise not to give them up easy
December 3, 2024 at 7:01 PM
11/ For the goal (to go back), Gabriel's check-back is immaculate and, to my mind, ultra-functional because of the expectation AFC have built. There is a constant fear of the back-post zone (as seen in WHUs tactic), so a 'nod' to this is naturally terrifying.
December 3, 2024 at 7:01 PM
10/ A few times we again see AFC's reputation preceeding them. Here, in the short-term, Timber's constant arrival near post forces LP forward and gives up that space again.
December 3, 2024 at 7:01 PM
9/ The value of Timber and these blockers in tandem can't be overstated. Look how limited this chance is without them. MA does very well vs Gab, Timber is loosely awaiting a drop, Tross can't cause chaos centrally, and Cala is working too individually+slowly to do ~anything~
December 3, 2024 at 7:01 PM
8/ We see this later for the penalty call. Instead of Cala, it's Saliba, using his strength in the block to free Gabriel of a very tight marker - boosted again by the freeing runs of Havertz, Timber, and now Cala, (who nicely all shift roles) and isolate this war
