This is an utterly surprising development, that no-one* could have predicted.

It's lovely to get reader feedback on the Clubland Substack.

The view, entering the East Wing of the White House two years ago, when it still existed.

Asbestos. I’m sure that in the Trump administration’s carefully-considered demolition of the East Wing of the White House (a structure largely built in 1942), they’ve remembered to safely remove any asbestos.

Not only has the Crown Estate seemed very, very, very keen to comply with The Times’ FOI on the terms of Prince Andrew’s lease, speedily & fully, without redaction; but The Times has gone to some effort to spell out precisely on what grounds Andrew could be evicted under the lease’s terms.

RIP Menzies Campbell.

Tony Blair and Rishi Sunak snapped after they bumped into one another outside Trump Tower in New York, four days ago.

That’s because the building was indeed a series of “gentlemen’s clubs”, until the last of them to occupy it, the Constitutional Club, sold it to the Masons in 1977.

I think the King has plenty of experience of this sort of thing.

The SNW season finale shed light on Star Trek. We now have an in-universe explanation for the Metron’s bad wig in Arena (TOS).

They’re naturally bald, but faced with Kirk’s magnificent high-end toupee, they felt naked confronting him without rapidly grabbing a wig of their own. Even if ill-fitting.

Well, Oxford University had a lucky escape there.

What's the oddest thing to see in UK politics this morning?

My contribution would be the new Leader of the Green Party, leading a choral rendition of "Lib Dem fightback", at Lib Dem conference 10 years ago.

Those of us who take a keen interest in these things have been seriously heartened to see the palpable improvement in veteran documentary-maker Ken Burns’ toupee situation.

Three months ago, "London Clubland: A Companion for the Curious" was published in the UK, with some excellent reviews.

Today is publication day for the book internationally, from Australia to the USA.

A colourisation (with the Kolorize app) of the earliest known photograph of London, looking down Whitehall in 1839; and the same view today, 186 years later.

Yes, I got this absolute nonsense last week. I have no intention of agreeing to any of it. (Not that that’s stopped my book with Bloomsbury being pirated on LibGen and then illegally used by Meta to train their AI. But I’ve no intention of encouraging that to happen even more.)

I couldn’t take my eyes off the press conference. The seam on Emmanuel Macron’s toupee is there for all to see.

While I try to make sure a good 90% of the Clubland Substack is free, a major bonus that paying subscribers get is my twice-monthly news round-up, which presents news of private members' clubs around the world, and tries to put it into expert context. clubland.substack.com

'London Clubland: A Companion for the Curious' is ranked by Amazon as their #1 best-selling book about Freemasonry.

Which is remarkable, not least as the book isn't actually about Freemasonry.
