I'm a writer and film critic from Australia. I'm the weekly film critic for the Star Mail newspaper chain (10+ years), and write articles, essays and science fiction. I enjoy movies, prog-rock, video games, collecting vintage Macs and walking for exercise
I found out about Billy Idol’s Cyberpunk from Todd In The Shadows’ show Trainwreckords. Todd’s perspective on the album is fairly negative, but I think it’s really fun.

Have you played the game Late Shift?
It’s a pretty tense, well-executed interactive thriller.

I can easily imagine Jodie Whittaker appearing in an M. Night Shyamalan movie or a Hideo Kojima game.
Whittaker’s directness and animated earnestness would suit either creator’s work nicely.
Maybe Whittaker could play an older Tomorrow in Death Stranding 3. :)

Have you seen anything with Jodie Whittaker, the Thirteenth Doctor?
Outside of Who, she’s probably best-known for Broadchurch or Attack The Block.

I run a weekly film review column for my local paper, and reviewed Mulholland Drive shortly after David Lynch passed away.
Here is my review from January:

I also have a vision for Ingrid Oliver as the Doctor, but this could only possibly happen if Steven Moffat returned as showrunner (and giving the Doctor the face of Osgood, a character Moffat invented as the Doctor's biggest fangirl, would be a little too much even for Moffat).

I would also LOVE to see Sam Neill and Richard Kind play Rassilon.

I'm also fine with American actors playing any other Time Lord characters.
My top picks to play the Master are an American (Caleb Landry Jones), an Australian (Hugo Weaving) and a Canadian (@eliastoufexis.bsky.social).

My top picks to play the Doctor are Andrea Riseborough, David Jonsson, Sarah Snook and Jessie Buckley.
Who do you want to see play the Doctor?

Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk make me really want to see David Jonsson play the Doctor.
Both films show his tremendous range: he can be warm, welcoming, funny, vulnerable, closed-off, scheming and sinister, and these are all vital traits for the Doctor. ❤️❤️🟦

Bugonia in Five(ish) Seconds:

(CW: Brief clip of cinematic violence, and suicide themes. Oh, and spoilers.)

When I had this idea, I had to share it, though I totally understand if you don't like it.

I also predict that Taylor Tomlinson, a clever comedian whose acts were all over social media for a while, will host the Golden Globes in the next couple of years.
November 28, 2025 at 11:24 PM
Conan O’Brien and Nikki Glaser will be hosting the Oscars and Golden Globes (respectively) again next year. They both did an excellent job this year, so I’m glad to see them return for a second time.
I wonder if Glaser will be “promoted” from the Golden Globes and host the Oscars someday.

I learned about Piltdown Man from a book about human evolution that I got for Christmas as a kid (the book accompanies a documentary that I never saw).
I still remember Piltdown Man's scientific name: "Eoanthropus dawsoni".

One of my favourite works of Doctor Who is the fan audio drama Exhausted Supplies. The Ninth and Twelfth Doctor impressions are near-perfect, the plot is so engrossing, and it’s incredibly well-produced.
While it’s unofficial, I absolutely count Exhausted Supplies as a great real work of Who.

I just saw Train Dreams, and WOW.
Slow and rich, with profound but natural dialogue, achingly moving performances (especially from Joel Edgerton) and stunning cinematography. With its themes of death and human connection, it's a little like an American Seventh Seal.

Oh, and a 128 GB M.2 SSD, which is ridiculous overkill for a 26-year old laptop running Mac OS 9. :D
Some Macs this old have trouble with SSDs, but this Lombard seems to have no difficulty finding and booting from a modern SSD like this.

Well, the screen situation is still… less than ideal.
Both of the spare screens I transplanted have serious artefacts, though the second one is still usable and not nearly as bad.

I picked up a 1999 Lombard PowerBook G3 from the tip-shop for $10 today!
It’s in pretty good condition, except for a badly-degraded screen suffering from the dreaded “vinegar syndrome”.
I can also tell it’s been upgraded, as it literally has “Newer RAM”. :P
(Plus a bigger – 10 GB – hard-drive.)

I hope Death Stranding 2 comes out for Mac too.
Death Stranding 1 got an excellent Mac port last year, so Kojima better not leave us hanging.

It’s rumoured that next year’s Doctor Who Christmas special may be a finale for the show, and I’m okay with this possibility.

I just watched Warfare. I’m sorry, but I don’t like it.
It’s an extremely technically-competent, pretty neutral recreation of a tense moment in the Iraq War, but the long lulls make the film weirdly boring when you have so little connection to the flimsy characters.

I was a film feature writer for the Horsham Times for a few months in 2022. I wrote an article about Brandon Cronenberg’s filmography, with a glowing critique of Possessor. :)

Have you played Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice?
It's fascinating how the game's depiction of Helheim, the Norse realm of the dead, owes such a stylistic debt to Christian portrayals of Hell, namely those of Dante and Hieronymous Bosch.
