I'm a writer and film critic from Australia. I'm the weekly film critic for the Star Mail newspaper chain (10+ years), and write articles, essays and science fiction. I enjoy movies, prog-rock, video games, collecting vintage Macs and walking for exercise
I watched two sobering videos by LegalEagle about America’s descent into authoritarianism under the rampantly law-breaking Trump administration, and realised that many MAGA Republicans would probably AGREE that America is embracing authoritarianism, but think it’s okay because Trump is doing it. :(

I can easily imagine Jodie Whittaker appearing in an M. Night Shyamalan movie or a Hideo Kojima game.
Whittaker’s directness and animated earnestness would suit either creator’s work nicely.
Maybe Whittaker could play an older Tomorrow in Death Stranding 3. :)

I'm sure this is well-trodden discourse by now, but I wonder how Steve Jobs would have felt about the trashcan Mac Pro, which came out two years after he died.

I wonder if Apple CEO Tim Cook has faced (deserved) pressure to step down due to his chumminess and even complicity with Trump.
After all, Cook donated $1 million to Trump's inaugural committee, gave him that glass-and-gold trophy, and donated to the construction of the White House ballroom.

Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk make me really want to see David Jonsson play the Doctor.
Both films show his tremendous range: he can be warm, welcoming, funny, vulnerable, closed-off, scheming and sinister, and these are all vital traits for the Doctor. ❤️❤️🟦

When I had this idea, I had to share it, though I totally understand if you don't like it.

I don't know if The Escapist has been hacked or they just suck even more now, but all of their content for the past two months is about poker, slot machine games and online gambling. :(

Conan O’Brien and Nikki Glaser will be hosting the Oscars and Golden Globes (respectively) again next year. They both did an excellent job this year, so I’m glad to see them return for a second time.
I wonder if Glaser will be “promoted” from the Golden Globes and host the Oscars someday.

It feels really nice to just relax with no clothes on (especially if you’ve had a very strenuous day), and the warm afternoon earlier today was very conducive to this. :)

One of my favourite works of Doctor Who is the fan audio drama Exhausted Supplies. The Ninth and Twelfth Doctor impressions are near-perfect, the plot is so engrossing, and it’s incredibly well-produced.
While it’s unofficial, I absolutely count Exhausted Supplies as a great real work of Who.

I just saw Train Dreams, and WOW.
Slow and rich, with profound but natural dialogue, achingly moving performances (especially from Joel Edgerton) and stunning cinematography. With its themes of death and human connection, it's a little like an American Seventh Seal.

I picked up a 1999 Lombard PowerBook G3 from the tip-shop for $10 today!
It’s in pretty good condition, except for a badly-degraded screen suffering from the dreaded “vinegar syndrome”.
I can also tell it’s been upgraded, as it literally has “Newer RAM”. :P
(Plus a bigger – 10 GB – hard-drive.)

It’s rumoured that next year’s Doctor Who Christmas special may be a finale for the show, and I’m okay with this possibility.

Would you be interested in writing a short story for my upcoming book (my fourth) about human society on Mars?
The book offers a very Left, anti-Musk vision of human Mars.
This is a paid, legally-protected gig, and I'll even let you write like Cormac McCarthy if you wish. :)

I just watched Warfare. I’m sorry, but I don’t like it.
It’s an extremely technically-competent, pretty neutral recreation of a tense moment in the Iraq War, but the long lulls make the film weirdly boring when you have so little connection to the flimsy characters.

The line 'Love was a cold bed full of scorpions' in The Fate Of Ophelia always reminds me of Great Destiny Man by Chris Voigt.

I know this question is like saying which pufferfish can kill the fewest people, but who would you say is the most morally good (or least morally bad) member of the Trump administration?
I want to make a political parallel in a film article about Wicked: For Good.
November 23, 2025 at 9:34 AM
In Wicked: For Good, the animals’ anguish over fleeing their home of Oz rings hollow when you consider how most of them must have come from somewhere else already.
Oz is basically a more magical Holland, and kangaroos sure as shit didn’t evolve in Holland.

Somewhere in the multiverse, where Doctor Who is an American show, Stephen Root is the Seventh Doctor.

I’m replaying Inside, and while it’s still an enthralling dystopian horror game with incredible atmosphere, art direction and clever environmental puzzles, I’ve never liked the twist with the “mermaid”.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy has been called “unfilmable”, likely due to its extremely disturbing, confronting content.
And yet, there are plenty of films that are equally or even more disturbing than this novel, so I wouldn’t call Blood Meridian “unfilmable”.

I remember how Safety Dance became a meme in the Deus Ex community, as Human Revolution players realised that when you quickly move left to right and back while in cover, Jensen looks like he’s dancing. 😆

If they ever turn I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream into a film, I hope they adapt both the source short story and the 1995 video game.
I would cast Paul Walter Hauser as Gorrister, Andy Serkis as Benny, Gabrielle Graham as Ellen, Udo Kier as Nimdok, Jonathan Groff as Ted and Brad Dourif as AM.

There are strong rumours that Apple won't be updating the Mac Pro any time soon, and might even discontinue the Mac Pro in favour of the Mac Studio. :(
I'd be rather sad if they do this, as I love my Mac Pros, and the Mac Pro range has a fascinating bumpy history.
