The closest TV/film/etc. character (and somewhat of an inspiration) to Serenais is Jadzia Dax from Star Trek: Deep Space 9. Both are action inclined lady scientists quite handy with an unusual bladed weapon that do not exactly conform to social standards for their job, role, gender and origin.

Serenais, being an aetherologist, designed her rapier (if it can be called such) to fit her way of casting, her aetheric field and her aether flows. As such, the primary reason to use it is that it just does a really good job. (...)

There isn't all that much depth to the colors outside of Serenais choosing them several years back out of being a bit of rebel (everyone in Sharlayan's Studium wore white at the time, despite it not having been mandated anywhere).

I am unsure exactly when Serenais bought her GL-II, but since Cid gave her a discount, she probably got it in late Heavensward or early Stormblood.
Prior to that, I am not sure. She headcanonicaly has a chocobo, Kitrinos (a very good boy), but I am not sure how to fit him into her lore.

Serenais has naturally white hair, so, she died some of it black. I suppose that counts?
And, she keeps colors that exact way, therefore one can assume she likes that.

Gunmetal and jet black dyes are by far the best. Pure and pearl white ones work too, on ocassion.
What does not work are pastel color ones, especially when mismatched. Serenais would simply never wear anything looking like a blended case of crayons.

Garlond GL-II. It just fits Serenais exceedingly well. Hence, it is both mine and her favourite. And it is not close.

Serenais started wearing black because a loophole in Studium dress code allowed for it (even though everyone wore white), and just liked it afterwards. And the outfit just fits her aesthetic of preference. Not to mention, wearing it, one does not freeze when driving a Garlond GL-II.
