Worth pointing out the biggest supporters of trans people (which is who bigots mean by “gender ideology”) are bisexual & lesbian women. All the public “concerns” about trans people (phase, indoctrination, regret, etc) are recycled forms of homophobia. This is why LGB solidarity with the T is strong.

To channel Elle Woods for a moment: keep being fabulous in your research and practice.

I’m SO PROUD of my PhD student @sammorgn97.bsky.social who successfully defended her thesis yesterday. Sam wrote a brilliant thesis examining how we can use emotion and space to navigate the legal politics of LGBTQ+ rights advocacy in the Caribbean.

Now to celebrate! 🥂

Performed a new act this week: “Be More Elle Woods: Fabulousness as Legal Practice.” Fabulousness is a way of seeing the world that attends to the messy, gritty, and painful while finding ways to cultivate creativity, beauty, curiosity and justice even in conditions where that might seem impossible.

I had the queer joy of sparkling with @saranahmed.bsky.social, as we discussed her new book, No Is Not A Lonely Utterance. We explored complaint as a way of cultivating feminist listening, queer world building, and institutional disruption. We reverberate with collective refusals to injustice.

13 years ago… I spoke to an Australian newspaper about why schools need policies that affirm sexual and gender diversity. As politicians target LGBT folk, it’s vital we resist the closering of our lives. We’re not “ideologies.” We’re people. And we deserve to thrive everywhere, including in schools.

At a time when queer existence in universities is treated as an “ideology,” I’m proud to be on display at work being unapologetically gay.

“To assemble, to say no, to do no, throws so much open … doing what we can, when we can, however we can, in the wear and tear, for as long as it takes.”

Just read @saranahmed.bsky.social’s energising new book on complaining as a collective task of feminist and queer world (un)building. Get a copy!

At a time when political resentments and despair shape caricatures of diversity and inclusion, it feels so refreshing to be back teaching Equalities Law to a group of thoughtful and critically engaged students.

My parents came to visit me in Canberra today and we had a wander to Floriade. They’re big fans of growing flowers. I mean, they did a pretty excellent job nurturing a pansy like me.

It was a privilege to be invited to give a guest lecture about queer judgment writing to A/Prof Wayne Morgan’s Law, Identities & Sexualities class. This is the first and longest running Law & Sexualities course (about 30 years now!) in Australia.

Thanks for the wonderful chats, Wayne!

My new book explores how emotions like pain, shame, and anxiety shape the ways we conceive rights and pursue reforms to protect LGBT people. I think/feel through how we might live with discomfort as we seek justice.

Happy Father’s Day. I’m lucky to have a dad who never made me feel ashamed for not wanting to play cricket as a kid (which is blasphemous in most Sri Lankan households) and letting me strut about in heels and play with dolls instead. All kids deserve to grow up without gender policing! Thanks, Appa!

Working as a legal academic and writing on LGBT rights is not an abstract intellectual exercise. It’s deeply emotional. It requires political accountability and intellectual vulnerability.
