Back end web applications dev by day, movie watcher by night. I collect vintage Japanese toys, enjoy hiking and traveling, and am an avid cinephile. I created Movielogr. He/Him/His.
Finishing up the evening with birthday movie #4, THE DAMNED. Literally sitting in the same seat in the same theater as the previous film HARBIN. Pretty rare for that to happen!

Back at AMC for birthday movie #3, Korean historical thriller HARBIN.

Seated for birthday movie #2 at Alamo Drafthouse: DEN OF THIEVES 2: PANTERA.

Birthday movie #1 was OCTOPUS WITH BROKEN ARMS at AMC. A Chinese THE USUAL SUSPECTS but more depressing. Good though!

CONCLAVE is a first rate political thriller and an adult movie for adults, the likes of which we don’t see as often anymore. Fiennes, Tucci, Lithgow and Rossellini all turn in fine performances. Rossellini has a hard stare that will break a man!

Saw Ridley Scott’s GLADIATOR II in IMAX tonight. That’s a lot of money, time and effort spent on something that, at best, is a whisper of the first. Mainly it lacks tension and the outcome never felt in doubt. The craftsmanship is outstanding though. Great set/costume design!

Watched IRON ANGELS 1-3 (aka FIGHTING MADAM and a half dozen other titles), all three directed by Teresa Woo. I hope a boutique label is working on remastering and releasing these. They deserve to be rediscovered!

Finally caught up to SMILE 2 in the theater tonight. Really well made with an outstanding performance by lead Naomi Scott and an unnerving score by Cristobal Tapia De Veer. That said, I prefer the first film as I felt I engaged more with the characters.

Not gonna miss the opportunity to see TUMBBAD on the big screen! I was fortunate enough to see it at FantasticFest way back when. Looking forward to a revisit. I’d LOVE to own this on a nice UHD physical release.

Watched the final film in The Masters of Horror series, DREAM CRUISE, last night. That’s one of my year’s movie-watching goals completed.

Seated at Peoria’s wonderful Giant Theater at the Riverfront Museum for another film in Mark Eliot’s Art of Film, The American New Wave. This weekend it’s Michael Cimino’s flawed classic YEAR OF THE DRAGON starring Mickey Rourke.

Caught up with HERETIC tonight and damn did it really exceed my expectations! Excellent performances from all three leads, but especially Hugh Grant. A nicely wound whodunnit style mystery cloaked as horror.

This year I’ve been making my way through the MASTERS OF HORROR SERIES, in order. Tonight’s episode was Mick Garris’ adaptation of a Clive Barker story, VALERIE ON THE STAIRS. RIP Tony Todd.
