Yesterday I co-hosted a Roundtable on Foundation-Government Collaboration. Foundations are deeply embedded in communities and can inform policy with on-the-ground insights, helping government better serve those most in need.

August 1st is Emancipation Day – the anniversary of when Britain’s Parliament abolished slavery in 1834. Today and every day I honour and commemorate my ancestors and those who paved the way for freedom. Let us act collectively to end anti-Black racism and demand justice.

I recently attended the 5th Senate Social and launch of Model Senate, an initiative meant to engage more than 100 Canadian students and young people in our democracy. I met and spoke with many vibrant and intelligent young leaders.

This week my Senate colleagues and I had a productive visit to Edmonton. We met with Alberta MLAs to discuss issues affecting Black Albertans. We visited the Africa Centre for a tour and discussions and also explored the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institut (@amiithinks.bsky.social).

This week, I attended the Westminster Seminar on Effective Parliaments in London. This program provides for parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth to explore parliamentary democracy, practice, and procedure and to share experiences faced in our work.
