Retired Iowa state senator. Author of America’s Climate Century (2013). Paris to Pittsburgh (2018). Born at 322 parts per million.
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, has eliminated gas and oil and replaced it with geothermal and three 5-ton air-to-air heat pumps. The church is now 100% carbon free, with electricity from its rooftop solar panels and its “solar pergola” over the patio.

Climate solutions work!

Took this picture ten years ago on Veteran’s Day in Glidden off Highway 30. I personally knew a World War I veteran, my grandfather. Let us always commemorate this day and strive continually for the peace it envisions.

Might be too late to make the 7 pm show tonight (November 6) at the FilmScene in Iowa City, but I hope you get to see “Iowa’s Dirty Secret: The True Cost of Burning Coal,” a 30-minute documentary, soon.

Rob Sand endorsed by the Iowa Federation of Labor in Cedar Rapids this afternoon. Touting nonpartisan reform and working for ordinary people, not special interests and insiders.

Zach Wahls, US Senate candidate, was in Cedar Rapids today to convene and lead a rally to “protect our health care” under attack by Ashley Hinson and Republicans. Affordable Care Act tax credits for working people are expiring, and Republicans already voted to take away funding for Medicaid.

I was encouraged to see the solar panels on Grace United Methodist Church along Highway 6 in Tiffin today. Solar reduces energy costs and air pollution. It is something many building owners and landowners can do.

Just left the kickoff event for Clint Twedt-Ball for Congress. As a pastor and non-profit leader, Clint is a first time candidate who says he is seeking to address the basic needs of citizens (too long ignored by politicians of both parties) and the darkness and division affecting our country.

Thinking today about Melissa Hortman four months after she was assassinated along with her husband Mark and their dog Gilbert.

May they rest in peace free of the violence that took their lives.

Photo is Melissa preparing to preside over the Minnesota House of Representatives on March 1, 2024.

Ready for the one-actor play on Clarence Darrow in the Old Capitol Senate Chamber
in Iowa City starting at 2 pm today (Oct. 5). If you miss this one, there are upcoming shows in Waterloo (Oct. 7), Des Moines (Oct. 9), Council Bluffs (Oct. 10), and Sioux City (Oct. 13).

Another disappointment from Iowa’s congressional delegation (Grassley, Ernst, Hinson, Feenstra, Nunn, and Miller-Meeks) to shut down the government.

No sign of negotiation - actually giving something to the other side - to keep it operating.

But the sun still rises!

Photo from late July.

The bean harvest is done, but the solar panels at church keep generating power.

Electric bill in Sept. 2022: $886
Electric bill in Sept. 2025: $148

Savings: $738 (and avoided utility inflation).

Solar works for Iowa.

Happy Sun-Day.

The League of Conservation Voters helped organize a rally at the University of Iowa today. Message: “we can’t afford” what Trump and Republicans are doing to our democracy, our economy, our health, and our environment. Photo of my new sign taken on the Express 380 bus heading back to Cedar Rapids.

One of the grave markers from the Battle of Antietam (September 17, 1862) which I visited in 2015.

I helped harvest prairie seeds (probably 3-4 tablespoons of golden Alexander seeds) this morning at Kent Park in Johnson County near the Conservation Education Center. What a lot of work for a small amount of seeds. Beautiful prairie surrounding the center.

More on the Hyundai plant construction raid. Trump Administration created the problem and raid was bad approach to addressing it.

Start and finish photos from this morning’s harvest at the solar garden at Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids. Beans are slowing down, but these were delivered to Feed Iowa First for distribution today.

The beans at the solar garden at Christ Episcopal Church are slowing down, but our three-person crew picked these this morning for distribution today at the Loaves and Fishes food pantry at Westminster Presbyterian, 1285 3rd Ave SE, in Cedar Rapids. Loaves is open on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 5:00 pm.

So I went to the federal building today to deliver a letter from 14 organizations urging Rep. Hinson (and the rest of Iowa’s delegation) to oppose the so-called “PERMIT” Act that would take away clean water act protections - when Iowa’s water is already in crisis.

Please speak up for clean water!

Not as much as last week, but still a good harvest this morning at Christ Episcopal Church for the Loaves and Fishes food pantry at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1285 3rd Ave SE, for distribution today between 2:30 and 5:00 pm.

Loaves and Fishes is open every Tuesday.

The Iowa Faith & Climate Network held its quarterly board meeting at the “Our Lady of the Prairie” retreat center near Wheatland in Clinton County today. An absolutely beautiful setting. I hope you can arrange a visit and support the work of both organizations.

I said our beans were slowing down, but after 72 hours since our last picking there were lots in the solar garden at Christ Episcopal Church this morning.

These are going to Loaves and Fishes at Westminster Presbyterian, 1285 3rd Ave SE, Cedar Rapids for distribution today between 2:30 and 5:00.

Clint Twedt-Ball, candidate for U.S. House in Iowa’s 2nd District, sharing his kitchen-table-issue, get-it-done approach for working families, at the Democratic Wing Ding last night.

A pastor and nonprofit leader, he’s new to politics. I’ve known Clint for over 20 years and support him 100%.
