📚✨ After 18 years, Senate House Library has welcomed home several rare books stolen from the Durning-Lawrence collection in 2008. Thanks to alert collectors, international cooperation, and some detective work, these volumes—scarred but still whole—are back where they belong.

On this day in 1400, Geoffrey Chaucer — often called the father of English poetry — passed away.

Exactly 250 years ago (not on this day!), Thomas Tyrwhitt published his landmark edition of Chaucer’s works, earning him the title “the founder of modern Chaucer editing.”

After 17 years, 23 rare books stolen from the University of London’s Durning-Lawrence Library have been recovered — found in a Barcelona bookshop thanks to detective work, collaboration with police, and a touch of luck.

T.S. Eliot was born on this day in 1888.

To celebrate we’re showing off some of the original items in our collection.

This includes first editions of The Waste Land and Prufrock, with some even signed by Eliot himself.

Dingwall was a keen investigator of the paranormal. His kit, complete with luminous pins designed to “capture” spirits, speaks to his unusual blend of scholarship and curiosity for the unexplained.

We’re delighted to see a familiar object featured in the Guardian’s coverage of Ghosts: Visualising the Supernatural at Kunstmuseum Basel: a ghost-hunting kit once owned by Eric Dingwall, who left a bulk of his work with the University of London Library.
