And on the other hand, there's some games I very much enjoy (e.g., Cookie Clicker) which are *pure* micro-management and "achievement-hunting". "My brain 🧠 like when number go up 📈", that sort of thing.
It's not mutually exclusive to liking more freeform exploration à la Super Metroid or anything.

I suppose in the worst case, achievements can perhaps overemphasize that "checklist" aspect. Intrusive achievement notifications might also take away from the gravity of a scene or some such.

I mean, I like achievements in the same way I like spreadsheets and checklists honestly.
Many people don't, which is fine!
But there's something quite satisfying about making a spreadsheet or marking stuff off a concrete, finite checklist that I personally just enjoy. Very simple pleasure, idk.

If you still really like the zsnes UI, you can use zmz (I e., has a snes9x core)

You can swap the snes9x core it uses for a more recent one. You _might_ be able to do the same for more accurate libretro cores too, though I haven't tried.
