A day late, but some #ferdiritza for my WiP. #fe3h
"Who has done this," Ferdinand grated as he approached him again. His hands ached to do something to right the wrong. Jeritza's head turned slightly to the left, then the right; he shrugged. "The army. Bandits." "It matters. Has Faerghus fallen so low?" A soft sound that might have been a huff. "War is abroad. They are all the same." "They are _not._" Ferdinand spat it, not even knowing why he felt so strongly. "This was today, yes? We could still catch them." The Death Knight faced him, immobile and soundless, for long seconds. Then the gauntleted hands lifted, taking off the helm. In the moonlight, Jeritza was ghastly pale, his expression inscrutable. He unbuckled a strap at his wrist, pulled the gauntlet and glove free with a rasp and jingle of metal. He looked aside and took three steps, knelt beside a corpse where a broken spear-haft still jutted from the back of a youth. He jammed his hand into the dark blotch of the wound. "What are you--" Even as Ferdinand stepped forward, shoulders tensing, Jeritza lifted his hand--stained black in the moonlight--and licked from wrist to fingertip, the tip of his tongue curling up sensually at the end of the stroke. Ferdinand froze, breathless with disgust and dismay. "Still warm," Jeritza said meditatively. "Not so long."

Hubert was often away on other business, and that was easier in some ways, because he was the most difficult to fool. Without his sharp eye nearby, she could hide. Or so she thought, until one sleepless night when she was in the library, bent over a book that continued to make no sense to her, when her headache and her peace alike were disturbed by the sound of the door opening. Her eyes flashed up to meet the equally startled gaze of Ferdinand, coming in with a lamp. For a suspended moment he looked like a spirit such as were said to prowl the castle, his hair spread in fiery wings over his shoulders, his body insubstantial and indistinct. Then he stepped in and the spectral trails resolved into the long sleeves and dragging hem of a truly preposterous dressing gown, where a positive menagerie of animals rioted up the sleeves and down the panels. "What on earth are you wearing?" burst out before she could stop herself. He looked down, then up, and blinked at her slowly and with great dignity. "My absolute favorite robe. It is very comfortable."

Ferdinand huffed. "Hubert has even told me that I can be a bit much." Edelgard considered, then had to ask. "Did he really put it so gently?" "He did not," came the tart reply, "but I was able to extract his meaning from the unnecessary elaboration." Edelgard's lips twitched before she could stop them, and she burst out into an actual laugh at his wounded look. "I am sorry," she said afterward, "truly. But you are--" And there she stopped, because she had no idea what was about to come out, only that it grew from the dreadful soft clumsy flower in her heart.

The problem began when Ferdinand and Hubert happened to be reading the same book at the same time. They were both learned men, of course, Ferdinand in the way of someone who enjoys a delightfully-prepared dish and Hubert in the manner of one grimly masticating food to achieve the required influx of nutrients. Or so Ferdinand had always privately felt, an observation he managed to keep to himself until the morning he saw _Romance of the Liberation War_ on Hubert's bedside table. "Ah!" he said. "When I was young, I was absolutely fired by the story of the Lost Battle of the Plains." Hubert, already up and stealing a march on his morning toilet, looked over. "I'm reading it somewhat under duress," was all he said.  Freestand propped himself up on one elbow to investigate the location of the bookmark was placed. It took him a moment for the words to register, then he looked up in mild outrage. "I should hope not great duress. It is one of the classic works of literary history." "Yes," Hubert's tone soured slightly, "so I understand. Though I would hardly call it history, what with all the taking animals and three-day duels and the like." "You lack poetry, and all the license that comes with it," Ferdinand informed him.

When the strands tugged loose from his skull, fish could carry them away to far corners of the deep, and he would be a part of small lives. His skull wouldn't rest hollow and gentle on the ocean bottom. He had never seen a real ocean, and never would. He opened his eyes to the blur of alert lights screaming damage, curled his numb limbs inward to shock the interface back to life. Inhaled water, and coughed it back dark onto the stars as he reached forward to drown.

Thought I didn't have anything for WIP Wednesday, then remembered I did. #ferdiritza I guess?
The Death Knight, up close, was... more than a rider, less than a man. Ferdinand knew not how to capture the impression: a weary reaper, a distracted spirit of the slaughter, scythe hanging from one lax hand even as he yearned up in his stirrups and pivoted his head to north and south. "We must rejoin the main force," Ferdinand said, hoping the creature could hear him. He'd never been this close. The Death Knight swiveled its head--his head, he was just a man--to look on him. "Cut off," he said. His voice sounded hollow from within the cocoon of metal, its outrageous flanges and sculptures. "Perhaps this is the end." He sounded... almost bored. Ferdinand removed his own helm to gulp clear air, because one of them should be right-minded to plan. "Are you--take that off for a moment, will you? I feel like I am arguing with a theater prop." After a long moment, the Death Knight obliged, and became once more Jeritza--disgraced instructor, dubious-in-retrospect arrival to Garreg Mach, abductor of women and rumored murdering spirit of the town. He loomed even without the augment of horns, straw-colored hair mussed in its tail and a livid bruise trickling dark red from his forehead. His eyes were cold, dead, like Ferdinand had once seen on a preserved shark. He said, "Argue quickly. I lose patience."

"Go occupy yourself elsewhere," Hubert said. "Gnaw on a bone, perhaps. Stare at a corpse fire until your groin plate grows tight." Jeritza tilted his head slightly. "Did you think that you wouldn't need allies by this point in the war?" he wondered. "That you might have already contrived to remove Arundel, rather than having to watch your lady face him across a table and ask for his help?" Hubert's face drained of color. "Leave," he whispered. Jeritza had boxed him in now, between the window and the desk. "Is it knowing that you can't spare her anything, while Arundel grows fat and sleek on the blood of a continent? Or is it that she has replaced y--" Hubert attacked.

Re: the "story ideas you don't have the chops for" question, current one has SO MANY scenes, many of them intentionally short and/or disjointed. Figuring out how/whether it's even possible to string them into one line sure is a fun new challenge I gave myself for some stupid reason.

Another WIP Wednesday, I'm slow but there's still #huritza
Jeritza drawled a hand along the map, just to see Hubert's jaw tighten as he almost knocked over the little flags with their minor house blazons. "This was the easiest route to take. So we avoided it." "You, avoiding a fight? That's quite advanced." Jeritza narrowed his eyes at Hubert, trying to track the sense that something other than scouting parties was being evaded. "When are you attacking the fort?" "Tomorrow. Which I know is a hard turnaround for your unit, but they'll give up looking and return if we delay." Brisk business again, Hubert gestured to the sketched-out map of the fortifications, detailed in penciled smudges with whatever his spies had brought back. It was all normal enough--except for that sense of hesitation, and finally Jeritza stopped following the gestures and just stared at Hubert's face, sullen and inert. He already knew which of them could wait longer. Finally Hubert's glance caught Jertiza's immobility, and he broke off mid-sentence with a sigh. "I have a reliable report that Mercedes arrived with their last resupply."

"I've been meaning to ask," said Hubert. "How _did_ you learn those magics?" They traded assessing looks. "Why?" said Jeritza. "A remark Solon once made. He seemed under the impression that I had taught you, which I most certainly did not." Jeritza considered. "You could have. Perhaps you should have been the academy professor. You might have missed your calling." Hubert shuddered slightly. "What a gift for nightmare you have. Nevertheless. Up to that point, I had assumed you learned from Solon's ilk. Yet his words implied otherwise. So what was it?" Jeritza shrugged. "The usual way: I saw it done, I studied, I practiced." "The usual way applies to children's skipping games. It's simply not possible to learn such spells through--through mimicry and repetition." "That's how one learns all tricks. I never said the practice was easy, or clean."

"What would you have me do? Smile winningly? Shop for tokens of esteem to gift you?" Hubert smiled thinly. "Horrifying, thank you. No—but I would remind you to take care when maneuvers require you to oppose us on the battlefield. I know how easily accidents can happen." Jeritza replaced the few pieces of his kit in their spots and stood. "I have an agreement with Lady Edelgard. I have not killed any of your academy children." He moved to pass, but Hubert didn't give way. In the narrow passage, they faced each other. "But," Jeritza said, "you should keep them out of my path. Or I cannot speak to what may happen." Hubert studied him, eyes glittering like a snake's. "You mean that quite literally, don't you? Oh, it's a pretty enough threat. But I think, in your case, that you actually don't know." Jeritza brushed past him, armor on robes, and went to rest in the silent dark of the catacombs before returning to the surface.

Mother lost another baby. Emile didn't understand, and asked where they should look for it. Mother's face crumpled up like old laundry, and silent tears pooled in her eyes and ran down her sickly-pale cheeks. Father laughed harshly, until he saw mother's face. Then he said, "Look what you did," and backhanded Emile. Mercedes found him later in his hiding place and wrapped her arm around his shoulders, leaning against him and gently wiping away the snot and blood from his nose. "You didn't do anything wrong," she said, but the grinding raw edges in his chest said otherwise. When father would leave the hall at night, chuckling and saying it was time to _Find another baby,_ Emile would take his fork and stab it into his leg on the side that Mercedes wasn't sitting on, so she couldn't see. He was very good at keeping his face normal-shaped.

Hey, it's WIP Wednesday and I actually have a shareable snippet. CW, I guess, for briefly implied animal and child cruelty. #fe3h
There was a place in the garden hedged round with thorns. Sometimes, Father would throw a dog in there that had displeased him. Emile learned right away that the thorns--long, slender, but thick at the base--were as sharp as they looked. The tips broke off very easily, and winnowed their way under your skin, so fine that you couldn't find them to pinch them out with your fingers again. You could just feel them, working and creeping their way along through your flesh. He learned it first when he was very young, trying to reach through with food to the whining hound on the other side. He cried for days, the pain from his scratched-up arm giving no sleep. Father said it was a good lesson to learn young, but he never said what the lesson was.
