Chickens hanging out in their open air park. Description: The chicken These chickens live in their natural habitat. Chickens live in the shade of trees. Before sunset, they nest in the trees to sleep. They then "retire." A chick sits under the mother hen for the first few weeks. Afterward, it begins to graze in an increasingly wide circle around her. This territorial expansion is also seen in adult chickens. The run is the base, but the flock grazes in a circle of up to 50 meters around the run. Chickens can fly short distances and are fast runners on the ground. They have a built-in sense of direction and recognize each other and people. They can recognize up to a hundred different members of the same species. There is a complex hierarchy (pecking order) within the flock. Chickens have a good memory and can understand cause-and-effect relationships. During the summer, they like to take a sand bath. Chickens lay eggs in fixed locations, not necessarily in the chicken coop. Chickens eat grain, but also insects and leaves. The soil in this part of the Netherlands is full of lime and that is good for the eggshell.
