I looked at every violent tornado on the NEXRAD archive and noticed something.

Almost all of the parent supercells benefited from a favorable mesoscale interaction (nudger, merger, OFB, etc).

-convection more than tilted negative troughs due to greater separation between 500 and 850 mb (see below) wind vectors.

That was clearly the case today.

Strong tornadoes are not uncommon in southern Brazil/northern Argentina, but major (F3+) strikes on cities are very rare.

Nearby soundings show extremely large lower-level hodographs in the region, coupled with some dry air aloft, which would help offset and prevent an extremely crowded storm mode.

The setup was caused by a large, broad zonal trough. Zonal troughs tend to favor discrete-

A major, deadly tornado struck the southern Brazilian town of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu this afternoon, causing horrible (F3/F4) damage and leveling multiple homes.

There are reports of fatalities.

This is one of the worst SHEM single-city tornado hits in a LONG time.

That part of China is very densely populated.

Major typhoon #Ragasa will make landfall there soon, where it will bring high-end and widespread storm surge (given the typhoon's strong and broad core) to these areas.
