oh hey, it's Namgi Day (KST) AND WIP Wednesday! Here's a bit of Namgi who are supposed to be rivals, but instead are lowkey developing catastrophic crushes on each other
He hesitates for a moment before putting a tentative hand on Namjoon’s shoulder. “Truth doesn’t have to come at the expense of success. And success doesn’t have to mean sacrificing who you are. I’ve heard plenty of truth in your verses.” Namjoon looks up at him, narrowing his eyes. “You have?” “What?” Yoongi says, as nonchalantly as he possibly can. He hopes the dim yellowish light of the alley makes his blush invisible. “I’m on the forums. I’m on SoundCloud. I’ve heard some of your stuff. There’s a lot of great shit in there.” He pauses for dramatic effect, then shrugs. “I mean there’s a lot of bullshit in there, too.” That makes Namjoon laugh, exactly as Yoongi hoped it would, and he bites his lips to hold back a grin. “Fifty-fifty ratio, huh?” Namjoon says, bumping his shoulder against Yoongi’s. “Eh, more like seventy-thirty bullshit to truth,” he says, and Namjoon laughs again. “I mean, ‘Joke’?” Namjoon groans. “‘Joke’ was a joke,” he whines, “that’s why I called it ‘Joke.’” “I thought it was about how your haters are jokes.” “It’s both! It’s a joke playing on what a joke they are.” “So it’s not a joke, it’s a diss.” Namjoon opens his mouth and then closes it again, glaring at Yoongi. “Why do I feel like you’re trolling me?”

Namjoon follows Yoongi backstage, and Yoongi still isn’t sure what that meant and he’s also kind of freaking out again about getting out of there before his crew can find him or see him any closer, so he’s like--are you trying to fight me?? What’s going on here??? And they bicker but it turns heated and flirty, and then–maybe– Namjoon backs him up against the wall, not threateningly but like–the “are you gonna fight me?” has turned kinda playful but he’s rolling with it, using his size–and Yoongi is like, “please, I’m not afraid of you, I know your type, your only weapon is your tongue,” and Namjoon is like “and it’s lethal” and Yoongi is like “oh yeah? I’ll need more proof of that than just that little verse from earlier tonight” and Namjoon is like “okay” and drops to his knees because it’s all he’s been able to think about since the last audition and that selfie SUGA sent

Toothpaste dribbled from his mouth all down the front of his favorite black t-shirt, and he tried to suck it back in so quickly that he choked and coughed the rest of it out all over his bathroom mirror. “Fuck!” he cried, dropping his toothbrush in the sink as he fumbled with his phone.

Monday after work he stopped by the nice liquor store on the way home and spent more than was probably advisable on two Japanese blended whiskys Namjoon had recommended, plus a Taiwanese single malt Namjoon had made him taste at the bar that he had pretended not to like as much as he actually had. He opened that one that night and sipped it as he watched basketball, making mental notes of his critiques for the next time he saw Namjoon. He did the same thing with one of the Japanese blends two nights later, and cracked the last bottle on Friday night after making himself a nice dinner. It was good in the same ways the other two had been, and Yoongi made a list in his head of his own favorites with some of the same qualities to recommend to Namjoon the next time he saw him. He settled down on his couch with a sigh, turning on a playlist as he leaned forward to pick up the book he was reading from the coffee table. And then he froze. He sat stock still for a long moment, staring at the book he had bought because Namjoon had talked about it, listening to the song that was on his playlist because Namjoon had recommended it, the spicy finish of Namjoon’s favorite Japanese whisky still rich on his tongue. “Fuck,” he said out loud, collapsing back onto his couch.

this fact inspired one of my favorite little bits of namgi flirting/banter I ever wrote (from my grim reaper fic archiveofourown.org/works/514789...)
“So what does–” Yoongi waves his hand, stumbling a little as he remembers just in time that he’s not supposed to know that Namjoon loves Ryan-- “ your favorite Kakao Friend say about you ?” “I’m so glad you asked,” Namjoon says. He sits up straight on his barstool, chin tilted back, Namjoon’s signature bullshitting pose. Yoongi leans back, arms crossed, trying to look as stern as possible, though he can feel the smile in his eyes. “Ryan lion’s actual personality belies his appearance. He is a lion but has no mane, defying gender and species expectations.” “Gender non-conforming king,” Yoongi says. Namjoon giggles and leans toward Yoongi a little, hands reaching out towards him for a split second before he pulls them back and brings them together in a tiny clap. Yoongi’s cheeks and chest warm. “Our gender non-conforming king,” he agrees. “Ryan looks stoic, but he’s actually really emotional and sensitive,” Namjoon goes on, clearing his throat and re-assuming his serious-lecture pose. “He chose an ordinary life, but he’s actually royalty–” “Ah, so that’s it!” Yoongi cries, pointing at Namjoon. “You think you’re the king of the jungle!” Namjoon freezes, eyes wide. “Wait, what–” “You’re humble on the outside, but you secretly think you’re better than everyone else,” Yoongi says, nodding to himself and re-crossing his arms with mock disdain. “That’s what it means if Ryan is your favorite.” Namjoon is bright red and frowning, but the twitching at the corners of his mouth says that he is holding back laughter. “It means I’m big on the outside but small and sensitive on the inside,” he says. You are, Yoongi thinks. He takes a sip of whiskey to keep the words from slipping out. I know you are .

WIP Wednesday ft. Namgi banter inspired by the infamous soggy cereal debate
He sucked a deep breath through his teeth. If this was the way Namjoon wanted to play it tonight, Yoongi could give as good as he got. “Have you ever tried to eat dry cereal, Namjoon? It’s disgusting.” The smile dropped from Namjoon’s face. “Oh, no. Not this again.” “It tears up your mouth, and you have to chew and chew until it turns into a paste.” Namjoon hid his head in his arms on the bar. “How many fucking times are we going to have this argument? How many times are you going to torture me with this?” Yoongi bit his cheek to hold back his smile. “Until you get it, Namjoon. You chew and chew until it turns into a paste made of flour and your own spit–” “I’ll have you know I have completely given up eating cereal now.” Namjoon lifted his head to glare balefully at Yoongi. “I can’t even go down the cereal aisle. Because of your and your fucking flour spit paste.” “--but you know what isn’t a paste made of flour and your own spit? You know what’s soft and easy to chew? Cereal that’s gone soggy in milk.” “So what’s the fucking point of making breakfast cereal at all, then?” Namjoon cried, throwing his hands up in the air. “Why not just make it soft in the first place?” It took everything in Yoongi to swallow the laugh bubbling up in his throat and keep his face straight and solemn. He shook his head slowly, as though disappointed. “It’s like you don’t even care about the diverse textural preferences of our cereal-eating population,” he said mournfully. Namjoon stared at him, bug-eyed and red, and Yoongi made it another three seconds before he lost control and doubled over laughing.

18 - Originally, after Yoonjin hook up in my shifters fic, I was going to have Seokjin send Yoongi an Edible Arrangements bouquet made of sushi as an extremely awkward "thank you for the good time also I think I'm in love with you but I have to go back to being a Movie Star now" gift
and then Seokjin leaves and sends Yoongi an edible arrangement??? (but it’s an edible arrangement of, like–fish?? And seafood?? Much to Namjoon’s absolute horror) And Yoongi is like, wtf??? I thought that meant something, but I guess it was just the blow-off, and Seokjin is like, I’m in love with him but he’s just taking pity on me so instead of using my words I will send him a bouquet of dead fish

It's WIP Wednesday, and I actually have a WIP to post! Just a little snippet of Namgi banter from something coming next month....
“I couldn’t forgive myself if I thought you were out there, wracked with anxiety and unable to sleep,” Namjoon said dryly. He lifted his hand to place it on his heart. “I solemnly swear never to forget that you think I’m wrong.” “That you are wrong,” Yoongi corrected, wagging a finger at him. He could feel the smile tugging at his lips, and he pressed them together to suppress it. “That’s an important distinction.” “I can’t know I’m wrong when I think I’m right,” Namjoon retorted. He straightened up and rolled his shoulders back like he always did when he was gearing up to argue with Yoongi. “And neither of us can know whether we’re right or wrong on a matter of subjective opinion.” “I’m afraid I don’t have time to have an epistemological debate with you right now, Namjoon, I have a sticky table to wipe,” Yoongi sniped, but there’s a laugh in his voice that’s echoed by Namjoon’s.
