The times I've seen a game in a "dead" or "old" genre hit with modern audiences, it's rarely because the game was hybridized with new genres; more often it's because of *social* circumstances surrounding the game, which is rarely in the developer's own control.

People who have heard about these kinds of games want to see them for what they are; trying to sand off pieces to appeal to "modern audiences" can actually alienate new players who wanted to try the games as-is, while not actually bringing in people who are otherwise turned off by them.
