Intro paragraph to the special issue: The frequencies and severities of drought events are increasing. Many agricultural systems are already at risk, and some are in crisis conditions due to the impacts of long-term droughts. Solutions are required. The Inter-Drought conference is a global forum for researchers to share their latest findings. The eighth InterDrought conference will be held at La Serena, Chile from Nov 17-21. This special issue provides a synopsis of the meeting highlighting the key drivers of crop productivity and crop improvement strategies required for the 21st Century, our agricultural including topics of how to define the importance of drought in ouragricultural systems, measuring the levels of water availability and severity of drought in controlled environment and field experiments, drought responses at the molecular, organ, plant and crop level, breeding and agronomy solutions to achieve sustainable crop productivity for drought affected agricultural systems.

List of invited papers to the Accelerating progress in plant science via AI-driven research special issue and paragraph introducing the special issue: Advances in genotyping and phenotyping technologies have resulted in heterogeneous data from different model plants and crops. Whilst the resulting data have been integrated with state-of-the-art approaches from data science, artificial intelligence (AI) offers an untapped potential for innovative usage of these data sets. This special issue will provide detailed overviews and case studies of how AI has transformed predictive models that address diverse problems, from gene function prediction and analysis of cellular networks to prediction of complex crop phenotypes. The special issue will also point at challenges related to data handling and reproducibility in AI-driven research. The special issue is published in association with the SEB Annual Conference Antwerp 2025.

In Marchantia, amyloplasts function as statoliths in parenchymatous storage cells and play an important role in gravitropism; but gravitropism is not entirely abolished in the absence of starch granules - Hashimoto-Sugimoto et al.

Graphical abstract - (shortened, full abstract in paper): Gravitropism is a plant response to gravity that directs organ growth and development, playing a key role in the adaptation of land plants. While its molecular basis has been extensively studied in flowering plants, much less is known about this process in other plant lineages. Here, we investigated the gravitropic response of the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, a model for early land plant evolution. In darkness, the thallus tips extended upward, forming several straight, narrow structures whose growth direction was consistently opposite to gravity and disrupted by clinostat treatment. These structures contained amyloplasts in parenchymatous cells, and their sedimentation preceded gravitropic curvature, suggesting a role as statoliths. Amyloplast sedimentation started near the tip and slowed with distance, and in more distal regions, both the size and the number of amyloplasts decreased.

ACTIN2 was used as the reference gene for statistical analysis. Three replicates were conducted, with values representing the mean ±SE. (B) FYVE4 protein showed an increasing and then decreasing trend in response to ABA treatment. Seedlings of the WT grown on solid 1/2 MS medium for 5 d were transferred to liquid medium containing 50 μM ABA for the indicated times. Samples were collected and subjected to immunoblot assays with FYVE4 and Actin antibodies.
