Massive and energized crowd in Seattle says #HandsOff Democracy on a sunny Saturday. Who did an accurate crowd count? Easily 30,000 “pissed but peaceful” patriots.

So heartening to see a few thousand scientists, grad students, healthcare workers, support staff, and members of the public #standupforscience at the Seattle rally. The message - Science is for everyone - rang loud and clear. And so many great signs…

The crowd is swelling as Seattle stands up for science. @govbobferguson.bsky.social just stopped by. Fired NOAA researcher, censored mathematician, and climate scientists are showing why science is for everyone! #standupforscience2025

Why is the Arctic Ocean getting louder? Never thought of the ocean soundscape as another way to measure climate change. What a great event, @nswa.bsky.social and @jrmorber.bsky.social. Thanks, @townhallseattle.bsky.social. Such fascinating fish factoids. Read this book!

Highlight of the week: @lynnepeeps.bsky.social book launch at Town Hall Seattle. P.S. I feel vindicated for having low light levels in my house at night and a lot of natural light during the day - keeping my circadian rhythms in sync. Now, go buy The Inner Clock. Time’s a tickin’.

Whelp, we overwhelmed the bar for our NW Science Writers happy hour with @ferrisjabr.bsky.social and 25 members. So fascinating learning about how Emily Dickinson and Virginia Woolf influenced the lyrical writing of his new book, Becoming Earth: How Our Planet Came to Life.

Many were momentarily #unitedbybeauty as the #auroraborealis illuminated the atmosphere in a spectacular dance of light and color. We need more planet-uniting moments but so grateful to have had this one.

No filters, no editing. Just nature through the lens of my iPhone with a 3 sec exposure.

Super sad milestone. On March 15, CO2 measured at @NOAA Mauna Loa Observatory reached 427ppm for the first time. Since April 10, there have been five other 427ppm days and one 428ppm day. That means in my lifetime we’ve added 100ppm of CO2 to the atmosphere…and counting.☹️

It was a big week at #SEJ2024 in Philly. So much fun to accompany the massive amount of information I absorbed. Got to hone the elevator pitch for my book too. It was awesome seeing old friends and making new ones.

A few of the Seattle contingent at #SEJ2024. @seattlebryn.bsky.social and Breanna Draxler.
