This massive Douglas Fir was a seedling our kids got at school on Earth Day 20. Today it sequesters hundreds lbs of carbon…and towers over our house offering shade on hot summer days. Happy Earth Day!

In 2004 I took the opportunities created by the removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct to the Mayors Institute for City Design as my case study. Today that vision is experienced by the people of Seattle every day. Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make this possible!

On February 16, 2005, the Kyoto Protocol became law in 141 countries but not the United States. That day I pledged that Seattle would reduce our carbon emissions as if the US had signed on to the treaty. Thus was born the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Over a thousand Mayors joined.
