Tomorrow I get to show my 7th graders this picture, and try to explain who the Goths were--the ones who were running around Europe in the 5th to 8th centuries--and what relationship they have to the ones they will encounter (or become) in high school. Always a fun class.

The lineup of ships is nearly full off Astoria. I've occasionally seen four in the cluster off Rice Island, but this is close to the limit. All bulk carriers.

Instead of kvetching about politics or tech, let's do some staterooms. This is a first class cabin aboard the SS Leviathan, the former German liner (SS Vaterland) that was given to the U.S. after World War I. Pre-Art Deco 1920s styling (circa 1923). Interior pics of this ship are fairly rare.

Newsflash: according to YouTube user tabataba9986, academics and historians are not allowed to earn any money and must work for free. Also, apparently I'm a woman.

Did you know I wrote a gangster novel? Terry, a Gulf War veteran, thinks he's uniquely gifted at strategic thinking (is he really?) and instead of conquering nations he becomes a crime kingpin. With predictably bloody results. #booksky www.amazon.com/dp/B0DPJF8HZX

Staterooms! This is a first class cabin aboard the Rex, which was Italy's contribution to the great liner race in the interwar years. The ship debuted in 1932 and you can definitely see that here. Very '30s aesthetic but more Baroque than Art Deco. Sadly the ship was destroyed in 1944.

One thing I did miss about being on social media back in the day was doing my "staterooms" posts. So here goes. This is a first class cabin aboard the Bremen, the great German liner that debuted on the North Atlantic in 1929. Lovely Art Deco styling, exotic wood, etc.
