‘not big, not clever'
Are you perhaps assuming (or just hoping) the current PLP would nominate challengers (leader and / or chancellor) with more political and financial sense than the incumbents? That seems a bit of stretch, tbh.

neither nice nor nasty, just reality. this is another reason why not raising income tax is a mistake, it means higher borrowing costs for investment and therefore lower growth. a simple truth that Starmer & Reeves are short-sightedly ignoring.

if it wasn't for the fact they can still make this worse, I'd be tempted by the 0.5% 2061 🚀, currently -3% on the day. but they definitely can still make this worse, just by being themselves. if you're a foreign investor in Gilts, why on earth would you step in now ahead of the Autumn Statement ?

France were excellent, especially Ramos - but this generation of Boks clearly a level above anyone else on the planet just now, and look to have more talent and strength in depth. What a squad.

Would be very interested to see the evidence supporting your first claim - isn't it well established by now that, at population level, there is a strong and consistent positive correlation between income and life expectancy?

Perhaps (as @actuarybyday.bsky.social suggests), the distribution of such early deaths will skew heavily towards those who will pass on much less than average to their dependents?

my rule of thumb - on any topic where there's a distinct and self-evidently mad or evil position, roughly 1 in 3 Brits will publically say "yeah, that's me". So in this context, 'only' 1 in 5 is still very grim, but actually better than I'd expect.

Most people are better served in ready-to-wear, not cheap custom. If they do custom tailoring, they would benefit from having someone gently guide them towards better choices, politely saying "no" when necessary. See what Graydon Carter said of his tailor at Anderson & Sheppard.
