And I love one of the lines in your character arc article. “one end of the character arc must be anchored in the story’s opening lines”. As openings can be tough to write, I like thinking of framing openings like this

I absolutely agree. Just because you subvert an expectation doesn’t mean it was good for the reader or the plot. I think where I’ve seen secondary characters resolving a climax more often would be in a sequel. After we’ve journeyed with the protagonist for a time seen them overcome their struggle

Interesting read I agree that protagonist build towards that climax and that needs to pay off & the reader is invested in their penultimate moment Do you feel maybe there could be any times/ways to subvert typical expectations, play with character arcs, or letting other secondary characters shine?

I’ve been similarly doing that more lately during the ol’ day job where I can’t get good available time to write anything. So trying to keep organized notes, thoughts I don’t want to forget before I’m off and can flesh them out further. Definitely helps keep the faucet flowing during the day

That’s a great resolution! I feel theres often writers can never have enough support when sharing their works, so love this!

Lifelong gamer, love dissecting video games. But after tons of hesitation, from backlash and my preconceived notions, I finally started it and while it’s missing some “feel” of dragon age it’s gorgeous, pretty fun and the set pieces are what fantasy settings should be. I’m truly enjoying it so far.
