🚨NEW REPORT: PROCURE AND SIMPLE🚨

Govt spends ~£400bn a year procuring goods & services, but regularly fails to secure value for the taxpayer.

In this report, Re:State proposes a simplified, less risk-averse & more proportionate model, focused on crowding in more suppliers.

Kickstarting housebuilding in England is an enormous challenge.

In this report, Re:State makes the case for abolishing the arms length body Homes England and devolving most of its functions to the emerging tier of Strategic Authorities.

London & NYC are similarly 'ungovernable', but NYC appears far more effective at cutting through this thicket to get stuff done. Why is this?

- Greater fiscal autonomy is important...
- But so too is NYC's greater ability to embrace the messiness of modern urban governance.

V sweet to publish 'Go big or Go home' w
@stkaye.bsky.social

SAs can work in large cities w big populations & coherent economies.

They don't work in more rural, polycentric areas w low population densities. SAs in these areas are too small and/or incoherent to be truly regional.

Wrote about the treatment of place in the recent FFR & IS.

Govt should be commended for centring place in their policy agenda. But this needs more nuance, moving beyond a dichotomy of areas with significant needs vs areas with significant potential. Can Whitehall deliver this?
With the recent release of the Industrial Strategy and Fair Funding Agreement, Researcher, @seaneke.bsky.social, has explored their treatment of 'place', and the nuances between 'need' and 'potential'

🚨NEW PAPER 🚨

Today we publish the next paper in our Hospital of the Future series - 'Hospital as a service, not a building'.

For everyone but the most high-risk, complex patients, attending a physical hospital building should be a thing of the past.

Great to see this out today. Devo & LGR are bringing welcome change to local govt. But below the CA/LA level there's a growing democratic gap opening up at the neighbourhood level.

This risks further eroding the social fabric & worsening institutional trust.

How should we address this?!👇
