Absolutely. And to do so right after a strong electoral showing highlights that. As my follow-up post notes, I’m actually sure the costs outweigh the benefits. I was aiming for irony in the post and realized quickly (but not quickly enough) that I missed.

Certainly the timing of this deal is the most obvious problem with it.

I should clarify that ‘I’m not sure’ is ironic understatement. I’m actually quite sure this was a bad move but I think the quoted post is right that there are benefits to the move.

Agreed, although only if they nuke the filibuster which only Trump is unaware enough to think is a good idea.

Well, if Magic the Gathering is the voice of reason in your party, your party has also gone off the rails, but now we’re talking about a bunch of friends hanging out and meaning ‘off the rails’ as a good thing. So it works either way.

Reading through more of the transcript, I think my take needs more nuance: Thomas appears to want to rule for Trump but is asking the solicitor general to give him better arguments for doing so. So Thomas wasn’t ’having a go’ at the admin but he was signaling he wasn’t convinced by their pleadings.
