Y’all are never gonna believe this, but 14 years ago I married this woman.

TFW a herd of elk are hanging out across the street.
A yard with tall grass across a gravel intersection. At least 8 elk of various sizes are chilling in the tall grass, unbothered by anything. Some are only visible as antlers or ears poking up above the grass. One big mama elk is lying down and looks very much like a boulder covered in dry moss upon first glance.

All through October, the adults in his life stifled incredulous giggles when he proudly announced what his costume would be.

I think we did pretty well in the end.

I often think of James Hampton, working in secret for at least 14 years, turning scraps of cardboard & foil into The Throne of the Third Heaven.
No one else would see it while Hampton was still alive, and he never told anyone what he was doing.
Now it sits in The Smithsonian.

I assume you’re familiar with Speedy the Geoduck:
A college mascot that is ostensibly a geoduck, but looks more like a pickle in a taco shell. It’s a green, shiny, wrinkly clam in a silver & gold shell and basketball shorts. It had enormous round black eyes and a wide, flat mouth. The clam is doing a little dance. It’s all as horrifying as it sounds.

As a millennial I have no first-hand experience, but every bit of archaeological evidence suggests that the 1970s were *weird* — like in a Weimar Republic way.

Exhibit A is the variety shows.
Exhibit B is this chart of men’s facial hair among university graduates:

There’s no evidence Emma Goldman ever said “If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution.”

But there’s no doubt she meant exactly that. Someone told her it wasn’t right for a revolutionary woman to dance - not with such exuberance.
A quotation from Emma Goldman’s autobiography Living My Life: “At the dances I was one of the most untiring and gayest. One evening a cousin of Sasha, a young boy, took me aside. With a grave face, as if he were about to announce the death of a dear comrade, he whispered to me that it did not behoove an agitator to dance. Certainly not with such reckless abandon, anyway. My oldest kiddo, 5 years ago, when he wanted to be a geoduck for Halloween (the geoduck was the mascot for his pre-school).
He did not know then, nor has he yet figured out, why grownups were giggling about his costume choice.

Screenshot of the etymology text for “columbarium”: The term is derived from the Latin columba (“dove,” or “pigeon”), and it originally referred to a pigeon house or dovecote. It later acquired its more common meaning by association. Columbaria were common during the early Roman Empire, when cremation was normal practice.
