On January 1, Illinois begins to regulate employer use of AI, making it a civil rights violation to use AI tools that result in discrimination based on protected characteristics in hiring, promotion, discipline, termination, or other employment terms and requiring notice of AI use. #AIBillofRights
Illinois becomes one of the few states to regulate employer use of AI. House Bill 3773 amends the Illinois Human Rights Act to make it a civil rights violation for employers to use AI tools that result in discrimination based on race, gender, age, or disability.

What is Gov. Bob Ferguson's Plan A to backfill the state's budget gap? Sink the budget knife into everyone but the ultra-rich. 🔪💵

The 1st-term Democrat's given the cold shoulder to tax hikes ahead of Decision '26, a wealth tax included. 🗳️

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

Say #NoContractNoCoffee with us: DON'T BUY STARBUCKS for the duration of our open-ended ULP strike! $SBUX

I’ve long believed, often with too little evidence, in practicing the politics of joy, fun, radical inclusivity, and love.

Even if I didn’t like Mamdani’s platform, it’s very gratifying to see his kind of genuinely positive politics win the day, decisively.

The U.S. Forest Service has for decades ignored recommendations from its own scientists to monitor how much toxic smoke firefighters breathe. To find out how harmful the air gets, our reporters followed crews to the frontlines of a wildfire.
Inside the Poisonous Smoke Killing Wildfire Fighters at Young Ages
Across the country, wildfire fighters work for weeks at a time in poisonous smoke. The government says they are protected. We tested the air at one fire to find out why they are still dying.

One of the secret best things about the labor movement is that we do not value Coolness.
We connect, we compliment, we enthuse, we join, we are sincere, we sing in groups together.
Because we believe that we are stronger, and safer, and happier when we’re connected to each other.
It is impossible to have a mass movement without cringe, because the masses are cringe. You have to not think you’re better than everyone else to be a part of a mass movement. Cool is inherently exclusionary, you can’t win mass politics with cool.
After 2024, pundits brushed off the Resistance as cringe. I submit: Yes, it was. And cringe is good. Cringe, in fact, will save democracy.

This is probably the greatest live recording ever made.

King’s song is impeccable of course (“Winter, spring, summer, or fall / all you have to do is call” is a perfect pop couplet).

Hathaway’s performance is all easy, intimate charisma. Like you’re actually his BFF.

If you care about labor, you need to oppose Trump's ICE terror campaign.
"An attorney for a building trades union told me that a witness in a wage theft case in another state was recently targeted and deported by ICE. The union believes the employer encouraged ICE to target the worker, in a bid to undercut the wage theft case. "

PRIVACY: do you owe everyone you meet a full medical history?

EXPRESSION: to what extent is your clothing a legal matter?

Political violence disproportionately hurts people with less power, not people with more power. Political violence will disproportionately hurt people of color and women and LGBTQ people. It’s not fair, but that’s the way it works. Celebrating political violence means at best indifference to that.
Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence.

Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets.

Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe.

It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.
