Hopefully, what drives my perspective is not ideology but objectives. And evidence based policy designed to best achieve those objectives. Focusing on ideology allows us to lose sight of our actual goals. If we focus on objectives, we find that the left and right aren't as far apart as we thought.

One characteristic I think contributes to how the two sides see things differently relates to how we perceive others. The left is more likely to see everyone as “us” while the right tends to prefer dividing everyone into “us” and “them”. And this perspective informs lots of policy preferences.

Critics of socialized medicine might argue that the absence of profit motive will introduce inefficiencies the result in scarcity and/or higher costs. And there's probably some truth to that. But...

I buy more from my grocery store than they buy from me. Since they buy nothing from me, let's call that a 100% tarrif they're imposing. So I gotta reciprocate. I'll be nice and only charge myself a 50% tariff on everything I buy from them. Problem solved.
