this is really interesting..

today i learned that even without adjusting for the higher wages in seattle, it's just already more affordable than chicago. that's what happens when you actually build housing~♪

genuinely cant wait for the crosslake connection, cause this shot with a link train going over will go SO hard
May 25, 2025 at 6:44 PM
i think i found the most beauitful street view in all of chicago

imo the 66 should be routed out of the loop and turned into aBRT... the C line, perhaps!
May 19, 2025 at 7:34 PM
the 66 is a good example of why i think the CTA needs a major bus overhaul like DC's
May 19, 2025 at 7:32 PM
as much as i love chicago, it'll never not freak me out how much redlining and "urban renewal" they did. this was uncanny to see from the train

today, loowit is a sobering reminder of nature's power of destruction, but to me, it's more of a reminder of nature's power of life and renewal. the eruption created a beautiful ecosystem unlike any other in the world. that's far more powerful than any eruption!
May 18, 2025 at 8:12 PM
this all seems pretty grim and tragic, and don't get me wrong - it is! but on the 45th anniversary, it's important to look at loowit as it is today. it's a beautiful mountain, debatably moreso than it was 45 years ago. the area once a wasteland is covered in wildflowers and grass

along with him and the 53 others, $3.4 billion in damages were caused by the eruption, mostly by a phenomenon called a lahar, a mixture of superheated mud, rocks, trees, and other debris - this kind of thing happens on glaciated volcanoes like loowit, so it's pretty rare!
May 18, 2025 at 8:12 PM
among the 54 that died was david johnston, a volcanologist with the USGS temporarily stationed at camp coldwater 2. when the eruption began, he radioed in to the cascade volcano observatory in vancouver washington, with the iconic line "vancouver, vancouver, this is it!"

on 18 may 1980, following months of tremors and suspicions, "mt. st. helens" (loowit), a stratovolcano in washington state, exploded violently. the eruption was of a VEI of 5, the equivalent of 1,600 atomic bombs. 54 people died, and ash fell across the continent.
