what makes prsk's story stand out even among gacha games is that even tho there are other gacha games with all-girl casts, they always have a player character stand-in that plays an important part of the story and how the cast develops, providing an outlet for a generic and generally male-coded self-insert for the player to interact with the cast. prsk does none of that. prsk's main cast does not acknowledge the existence of a player stand-in at all. prsk characters don't have a section of their character arcs carved out to accomodate interacting with some mysterious chosen being with as little personality as possible. this gives the characters complete agency to tell their own stories and even the opportunity to dive into a diverse set of sensitive topics that otherwise would never be forced onto a player stand-in all at once. it's so refreshing to see so many female characters entirely exist for themselves without centering around guys (or the player), and to have the space to discuss dealing with misogyny, even having a character who's major character arc involves recovering from internalized misogyny, which has made 25's and mmj's story especially stand out to me.

mizuki is categorized as a "lady" (literally english word being used) in jpsekai. mizuki is referred to as a girl and 25 as a girl's group in dev interviews that are in japanese by the japanese people who made the japanese game. mizuki is excluded from every all-male instances like achievements and collabs. the only discourse on mizuki's gender comes from western fans harassing and forcing ensekai to use they/them without any explicit confirmation that she may be non-binary, and from transphobes stirring shit

yeah it is very true that ena's character arc involves moving past the need for validation and ena6 is a testament to that. a part of me is just projecting in hoping to see shinnei feel something for ena's art. 25's story already shows that it can handle sensitive topics maturely so if they follow through with this direction for shinnei it will be a very realistic and well written story even if it hurts.

fair, it's just frustrating to see that shinnei shows no sign of self reflection after ena4. prior to ena4 one of the biggest mysteries is why ena's art can connect with many others but not shinnei. at the time a major assumption is that shinnei just didn't live through the experience ena and so many others had and that he couldn't relate to her. ena4 basically establishes that shinnei either knew of ena's potential and intentionally hid it, or he just refuses to even try to understand ena. at the end of the exhibit ena poured her heart out to shinnei and relayed that they are the exact same in regards to how art is essential to their very being. and for that, shinnei's only response is a dismissive "好きにしろ". with no sign of any introspection or offer to help, he disappeared all the way through ena6. after their conversation in ena4 it's hard to imagine what else ena could possibly say to get shinnei to actually acknowledge her as an artist, let alone admit to and apologize for the abuse he's inflicted onto ena. either ena will have to get technical results like getting admitted to tokyo arts, or someone else shinnei actually listens to will have to reach him

it's a really interesting dynamic in how ena and shinnei see each other with their difference in approach to art. shinnei draws to master his craft whereas ena's at her best when she's expressing her feelings. ena's art has clearly reached the hearts of many people like futaba, the rest of 25, and yukihira, but shinnei never saw anything in it. what's notable here is that this barrier is entirely formed on shinnei's side. we saw in ena4 that in the past shinnei's shared a struggle with art similar to ena's, and in ena6 that ena's fully able to connect with shinnei's art on her end. normally it shouldn't've been that hard for shinnei to get ena's art, but shinnei's approach towards art blinded him to what ena's trying to convey. shinnei doesn't seek to connect with others through his art. his attitude keeps reminding me of that one time the shinonomes went on a family camping trip, and instead of spending time with his family shinnei stayed in a corner painting the scenery, and that made ena so angry she pushed him into a river. if shinnei was more conscious (and maybe less misogynistic) of connecting with others through his art, he may be able to see the kind of potential in ena that yukihira saw. alas this burden is now placed on ena to break through the barrier between them

yeah those judgements sting a lot and i've retreated from other fandom platforms over it. it's hard to fit in being seen as angst chasers when 25's relatability is much more for deriving comfort and some semblance of hope. tho i do feel all this has made me appreciate 25 more. at least im glad i found the niche right here of people long-forming 25 discussions and posting art

25 members have a shared theme of wanting to disappear forever and it doesn't take a genius to figure out what they actually mean by that. the average person who's never experienced this level of depression may not be able to relate to 25 just as they're unable to understand people irl who do suffer from severe depression, and that's part of the reason why we feel so isolated and depressed in the first place. in a sense it's poetic that 25 is so immensely relatable to those that experience similar hardships while being so alien to those that don't

retrospect part 2: what i missed
things that i missed one thing i didn’t get to before is that ena’s selfie habit was also a coping mechanism to escape from when she’s struggling with art, and as we see from mafuyu and mizuki finally deciding to stop running from their problems and face them head on, it may have inspired ena’s determination to stop running away towards her selfies as well. now 3 of 25’s members have gained the courage to face their struggles and not run away i wrote that kanade’s opinion on ena’s art matters to her the most but i definitely should’ve elaborated more on why that is important as kanade is the catalyst that brought ena back to pursuing arts. after ena’s altercation with shinnei where he crushed her dreams, ena became numb to all praises and stopped feeling validation from them. we see her completely dismiss futaba, and enamom’s praises stopped meaning anything to her. since ena’s strength in arts is to convey her feelings and connect with others, it would’ve been impossible for her to succeed as an artist if she were numb to other people’s input of her art. her listening to and being saved by kanade’s music is what changes that. immediately after hearing k’s music, ena was inspired to draw for the music, and the next morning, her art was used to make a music video. she didn’t even know who k or amia were yet, but seeing that music video and thinking “Thank goodness… It wasn’t a waste after all…” marked the first time she’s felt validation for her art again ever since shinnei betrayed her. this and her later joining 25 is what carved forward a path for her to become an artist. it stands to reason that ena values kanade’s opinion of her art the most, since drawing for her music is the source of how ena was able to feel validation for her art again. it’s also why in ena6 kanade was the one who helps ena realize that to her, failing in art means not being able to convey her feelings

retrospect on what i wrote about ena after ena6, especially about how her love for niigo is what makes her art special
things that i absolutely called: ena absolutely has the potential to become an artist and yukihira even actually said ena has a chance of getting into tobi (prestigious art uni) which is actually beyond what i expected but anyway it shows that shinnei was absolutely full of shit the selfie account was just a coping mechanism for male validation and that ena will eventually grow out of it with the help of 25. i'd like to point out that she deleted her acoount in her focus event immediately after ena5 as i wrote that mizuki's influence and mizuena5 is a major factor in her growth but the event itself didn't reference ena5 so i'll leave this particular point as just a theory i wrote that ena's biggest strength as an artist is her perspective of drawing art to convey her feelings, and specifically how much she loves 25 when drawing for 25. ena6 shows that for ena, what she considers failure and what she fears the most is not being able to convey her feelings. furthermore, yukihira said ena's too focused on succeeding and not failing with her art in a technical sense. this reflects what i wrote about ena's inital desire to surpass shinnei as an artist in a kind of technical sense. yukihira also said ena's greatest weapon is her worldview, and that when she's drawing what she really wants to draw, her art has that special attraction that draws people in. yukihira says that even without the technical skills, so long as ena's art can attract someone's heart, her art becomes irreplaceable to that special someone. this is literally what i meant when i said that the one aspect ena's art can surpass shinnei's is that ena draws to connect with others, and that her love for 25 makes her art special to 25 in a way shinnei could never accomplish. i was so on point with the direction of how ena will evolve as an artist

that is a good point, especially with shizuairi's story dealing with toxic idol culture and the inherent misogyny that comes with it, as well as airi's personyal struggle of having to prove her femininity just because she's willing to agressively defend herself and those she cares about. though i do feel there's a bit of missed potential in that later event stories could've delved more into airi's struggles to be feminine. with how airi called little airi a tomboy in the colfes side story forgetting that she used to hate it, it almost feels like her struggles for femininity got sidelined, which feels like a huge waste of potential, because i really really like the initial setup for this character and the character arc of her fighting for her identity could really be accentuated by her struggles to be seen as feminine. in japanese culture (and most places really) being aggressive and confrontationyal is seen as unfeminine, yet these are qualities airi grew up with in order to defend her little sister, herself, and later shizuku from bullies. this character arc could've been extended well into airi's career as an idol as there could be plenty of instances where airi still has to aggressively defend mmj from toxic idol culture, leading to more struggles of being seen as feminine. it also fits well into shizuairi's contrasting dynamic as shizuku embodies perfect traditionyal femininity and has her own struggles with self expression in spite of it. also the stakes could be raised even higher if airi were trans, elevating her struggles to be seen as herself as her every move gets hyper-scrutinized and becomes a major obstacle to finding her place in mmj.

this is just 1 of the reasons im certain the units have different writing leads. when it comes to cross-unit interactions there's way more impact every other unit has on 25 than the other way around, almost as if 25 is better able to understand and incorporate other characters into 25's growth. this isn't to say the writing in other units are bad, but the stories in the other units are largely self contained whereas 25 wouldn't be nearly the same if any of the other units weren't there. the writers are just better at offloading many pivotal moments and important relationships to a wider range of cast. this also comes at the consideration that colpal clearly intended that interunit relationships need to be written as more important than cross-unit relationships, and in that regard 25 gave themselves a way higher ceiling right from the beginning with how much the 25 girls are intricately and inseparably connected with each other, with the parallels between mizuki and mafuyu, the contrast between mizuki and ena, and kanade holding the common link of kindness and wanting to help each other anchoring them all together to work around their shared theme of suicidal depression. the writers can afford really close and impactful bonds between any of the girls and other unit members because the bar's been set to unreachable heights that other relationships easily pale in comparison to what 25 has between them. i also get the feeling that other units are just kind of scared to include some of the more touchy subjects in 25 like having to face queerphobia, misogyny, depression, guilt tripping, gaslighting, etc.. even the same character can feel different depending on what the story's focus is. when i first read just the 25 stories, i got major nb vibes from rui, but a lot of that pretty much went away when i started reading w×s how tf do bsky users deal with 300 char lim??? please just move to an actual fediverse instance

i also got confirmation of this from a native Japanese person, who actually brought up the singer part without the context but it's interesting to know that's how boku is used by female singers as well
