My biggest takeaway, or what helped everything click, was learning about how we classify communication theory (the 7 traditions) and the different lenses we can use to understand how communication works. It helped me decide what I’m most interested in and how it’s all interconnected #UTcommtheory

I think my favorite/memorable theory was Family Communication Patterns Theory, though this could be because I wrote one of my journals on it and feel like I understand it well 😂 But I really believe it sets the stage for the way we communicate and interact with all other theories too! #UTcommtheory

According to The Guardian, major US media networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox) have had very little presence/coverage at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil. In this case, media silence itself becomes a form of agenda-setting, by sidelining important global environmental conversations #UTcommtheory
Major US broadcasters sit out Cop30 climate talks: ‘They’re missing a lot’
Figures show none of US ‘big four’ – CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox – appear to have sent teams to cover summit in Belém

Agenda-setting is still relevant, just way more personalized. Algorithms curate feeds, but once you understand how, you can set your own agenda by engaging intentionally. Downside? Veracity of sources comes into question. It feels like creating your own reality for better or worse #UTcommtheory

I chose Amazon as my media conglomerate because I’ve seen them evolve so much. Amazon Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Twitch, MGM studios, not to mention a massive digital marketplace. Shows like The Boys critique capitalism and politics while all of their other services contribute to it #UTcommtheory

My favorite example of a parasocial relationship is with Aimee Lou Wood. I adore her oddness and authenticity, both on screen and off. She’s unapologetically herself, and I love how she speaks up for human rights with so much heart. I always want to hear what she has to say. #UTcommtheory

As a writer and someone who has worked in the arts, I never want to rely too heavily on AI or lose my ability to write from the heart. HOWEVER, I do kinda love being able to upload a rubric & use it to “grade” my assignments to make sure they’re as strong as possible before submitting #UTcommtheory

I feel like I’m having to work harder to fit into the dominant culture here in the Midwest. I lived in LA/SF and had a very diverse lgbtqia+ community. I can feel myself participating in non-assertive assimilation and I kind of hate it, like I’m paying a tax on my soul 🥲 #UTcommtheory

I think I respond best to participation when it comes to my direct reports or my relationship with my manager as I value open dialogue and shared decision-making. But at the organizational level, I think different approaches serve different purposes #UTcommtheory

The tv/film industry has an unhealthy culture surrounding work hours/expectations. If you went into OT it was praised and anything less than that you were seen as lazy and bad at your job. “French Hours” were used during the pandemic (10 hour shoot days) and that helped a lot!! #UTcommtheory

An enthymeme I’ve heard people use is “those who don’t make eye contact must be hiding something or lying.” The implied premise being that eye contact is a gauge of authenticity. But I don’t agree. It doesn’t account for neurodivergence, varying cultural norms or power dynamics #UTcommtheory

I’ve seen MMT be applied with how my close friends/groups will communicate across different channels, even having completely different convos at the same time. However, I did notice that since I’m living with my bf we just share things directly in real time without always sending them #UTcommtheory

Yesterday my best friend told me she and her hub are expecting! It reminded me of the lecture on Communication Privacy Management Theory so I asked her if she was telling people etc. & I could see how she wanted to manage that info since sometimes people wait to announce publicly #UTcommtheory

I think most celeb couples deal with the revelation-concealment dialectic and have to choose how much to share vs. what to protect. We saw it in Taylor Swift’s prior relationship with Joe Alwyn, his desire for more privacy was a well-known tension in their very public relationship #UTcommtheory

URT Axiom 8: shared networks reduce uncertainty. For example, if someone follows or adds me on social media and we have mutuals, I’m way more likely to accept. The shared network gives me context, reduces uncertainty, and I can ask the mutual to gauge vibes and feel safer connecting! #UTcommtheory

Awhile ago I dated someone briefly, maybe 3mo tops. It fizzled out naturally but then I ran into him a year later and he apologized for not telling me he was divorced. He thought he should have disclosed it, but I didn’t really care because our relationship never deepened 🤷🏻‍♀️

I came from a blended family type of protective and laissez-faire. My parents divorced when I was pretty young so each of them had different approaches. Sometimes there were rules but they were never consistent or explained. Low conversation + I had to figure most stuff out by myself #UTcommtheory

I violated an expectation when my bf went to hold my hand and I dropped it/didn’t reciprocate. He instantly was concerned, asked if I was upset, or if he had done something wrong. I felt so bad doing this because he is an angel 🥲 but it shows how powerful nonverbal communication is too #UTcommtheory

“I” usually identify as a more alternative person, heavily tattooed, piercings etc. and spent the last 5 years in the Los Angeles underground/goth culture. However I met my bf’s extended family and grandparents two weeks ago in Sylvania…needless to say I presented very differently 😂 🦇🧛🏻‍♀️ #UTcommtheory

My favorite tradition is probably the phenomenological tradition because i love learning about people through their experiences and their inner vs outer worlds. But learning about cybernetics helped give me language for what I ultimately want to do: understand and improve systems 🤓 #UTcommtheory

I think the most important criteria is explanation of data because it connects the observations and ideas into meaningful understanding. Close second is a community of agreement because dialogue/critique can further refine and grow a developing theory #UTcommtheory

Personally, I lean towards the interpretative approach. I don’t really subscribe to the idea of a single truth or fixed reality, the human experience is too layered for that. Though the objective approach does sound kind of relaxing tbh because of the straightforward simplicity 🤔 #UTcommtheory
