In late September, Black revolutionary Assata Shakur died in Cuba a free woman.

Orisanmi Burton celebrates her life and her unceasing dedication to the revolutionary struggle for liberation from the racist U.S. empire and all that it entails.

I need classic film recommendations for my spouse, who thinks he won't be able to *love* any black and white film (He thinks they can't reach the same level of visual craft as modern cinema. And he doesn't like the Old Hollywood theatrical style of acting).

I've been in kind of a rut, but Somebody Somewhere is making me fall in love with television again.

Finished season 1 last night and bawled my eyes out.

Pretty much sums up the approach of the tech industry now – trying to force us to accept a thing that is unnecessary and also looks like ass, and that was generated through theft of labor and intellectual property

This! The Oscars, at their best, serve as an opportunity to spotlight movies that are worth your time to check out! They're (in part) an educational and promotional tool, not just a vindication of your tastes.
Little rant: This is the time of year for anti-Oscar gripes, and the one I like least is "I haven't even heard of these movies!" Folks, that's on you. The 25 or 30 films in the mix have been talked about incessantly in entertainment media since September. Many are in theaters. Many are streaming. >

Had fun watching the original Night of the Living Dead as my first movie of the year.

An amazing horror film (that wouldn't have been the same without Duane Jones, his rewrites of his character, and his fight for that powerfully bleak ending to remain unchanged)

Second this! Great movie
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT!
Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person seems to have popped up on MUBI with no fanfare at all. It’s well worth seeing. Here’s my review for Nerdly: www.nerdly.co.uk/2023/09/21/v...

I've had a few first-time Christmas watches this month. Tokyo Godfathers, Klaus, and Shop Around the Corner will all be entering the holiday rotation.

Sorry to say Scrooged was absolutely foul. #moviesky #filmsky
a man in a suit and tie is talking to a woman in a fairy costume in front of a brick wall .
Alt: In the movie Scrooged, the ghost of Christmas Present pats Frank Cross on the cheek, saying, "Sometimes the truth is painful, Frank."

This is very cool

Wish we had a repertory cinema. I'd love to propose screening the Letterboxd Top 250 to the historic movie theater in my town. Then again, it's in the Bible Belt and they just play family movies.

A friend of mine recently interviewed at a fast food place whose manager told them female employees have to show up with a full face of makeup

Spouse and I are watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's his first time, and he pushed to watch it in random order "to simulate the experience of catching a show for the first time via reruns."

(He has crazy ideas, but I have to admit this one has turned out pretty fun).

I Saw the TV Glow was my favorite movie this year. Justice Smith is phenomenal as Owen, whose connection to a supernatural TV show gives way to questions surrounding his true identity. My review: www.thereviewgeek.com/isawthetvglo...

I'm so looking forward to seeing this!

Jomo Fray was also the DP for the *stunning* All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt last year, so it's no surprise his work on Nickel Boys has been widely praised ❤️
NICKEL BOYS is now out in NY/LA. In my opinion, it’s the best film of the year and a total masterpiece.

New to Bluesky, so here's the obligatory introduction post.

I'm a film critic (although my health has sadly prevented me from doing much writing these days).

I would love to connect with fellow movie buffs :)
