The mural was later intended to include a portrait of Vladimir Lenin, to which the Rockefeller’s objected. Rivera refused to remove the portrait, insisting Lenin’s inclusion was vital to the message. Before the mural could be completed in 1934 the Rockefeller’s chose to destroy it.
