Never been to Jersey either but it sounds quite a bit more laid back than NYC. Beach culture and whathaveyou.

We have beaches too, but they're rocky, not sandy. And the water's cold and rough. It's very different from your typical touristy beaches.

I've never been to NYC, but I see pros and cons to it. On one hand, it feels like you'd never be bored, there's always something going on or something to do. But on the other hand it just feels overwhelming, like a sensory overload. Noisy not just to the ears but to the soul.

Nanaimo's about 100,000 people, Victoria's almost 400,000 (including the neighbouring municipalities). They're the two biggest cities on the island, but much, much smaller than what you think of when you typically hear "city".

Both are very walkable/bikable as well, if you're into that.

I learned French in school but never had to use it outside of that, so... it's mostly all gone now. But it's only big in the eastern half of the country. You're more likely to run into Cantonese or Hindi over here than you are French.

It's where I'm from so I can definitely vouch for its beauty and the friendliness of the people.

Lots of outdoorsy activities if you're into that. Life here moves at a slower pace compared to the big cities.

Very little French is spoken on the west coast, you'll be fine.

I have nearly 1500 followers over there...my timeline moves very fast and it's easy to fall weeks behind, so I've probably seen a lot less than you think!

Yeah, immigration is tough in general, and Canada's especially hard to get into - much harder now than it was a few years ago, and our new PM's going to toughen it more (since we need to build more housing before we can bring in more immigrants).

Still, Vancouver Island is a great place to visit!

It's not so much "who they allow into instances", rather, it's new folks get scared off because they constantly get harped on about "Use Alt Text", "Bridges are bad", "Search is bad", etc.

I had to google TPD since I'm not from the USA, hope your application works out.

It's a reference to "Homeowners Association", which is a thing in the USA where you have a small group of people who try to dictate what you can and can't do with your property (when you buy your home, you have to join the HOA and pay dues in some parts of the country).

Fedi has folks like that.

Yeah, it got increased again, 5000 characters per post now! I don't have to write threads there any more 😂

Agree that it's not the best for mental health especially if you have to deal with the HOA. But these days I mostly just stick to my retrocomputing bubble.

(and you can always zip it up, copy it to a modern machine, and then run it using Infinite Mac or an emulator first, if you're worried about a strange binary from an untrusted source!)

You're welcome! This is the "FlyingLine" demo from the "Macintosh C Programming Primer" book, modified to print my greeting. It runs on System 1 all the way up through Mac OS 9.2.2!
