Phil’s Christopher Sanchez is roughly the same size as another Philly lefty: 1930s Philadelphia Stars ace Slim Jones. 6’6” stringbean, star in the old Negro National League

Family/Baseball Note: My Aunt Lynn (she's 75 years old) married longtime partner David Bessent in Florida today. David's Uncle is the late Don Bessent, who pitched for Brooklyn in the 1950s. Congrats to Aunt Lynn and David!

Halfway through your book. Excellent writing! Nice work. Also...feeling incredibly bummed out about some of our fellow human beings...

August 1945: During a traffic stop, a Washington DC cop punched Satchel Paige in the face a couple times. Satch had just thrown 3 innings, striking out 6 Homestead Grays batters. (New Journal and Guide, Norfolk VA)

Useless Fact: During their professional baseball careers, Micheal Jordan hit THREE times as many Minor League home runs (3) as Babe Ruth did (1)! Ruth had 714 more than MJ at the big league level.

The entire broadcast was pretty much sponsored by Lucky Strike and Schaefer Beer...

I collect Strat-O-Matic card sets (mostly baseball, but also some 80s NBA, and football). For the initiated: Strat has created realistic, text-based tabletop sports games since the early 1960s.

This ridiculously bad photoshop job was highly coveted in Chicago. Kong was a big deal for every Cubs kid here from 1978-79. You knew this card was garbage, but had to have it!

My Dad’s 1969 Batting Championship trophy (beer league stuff) is one of those things I won’t part with. He introduced me to the game and its history. Dad would’ve been 88 this December.
