Crossed a younger pahoehoe flow on the way out. Though it looks hellish and is rough on the boots, it's relatively easy and safe to cross compared to other parts of the BLB.

Though human has certainly been here, I could detect little sign; it's been a while. The low branches along the trail were polished by bear fur - not a busy trail but, once you're in here, there's nowhere else to go.

Nearly had to take my pack off to squeeze through a slot just after the cave. The bears fit through it, so...

Had to pass through a short but high cave, ~20 yds. Was able to get a good look at it, stable, safe; bears went through it, so...

Pretty though. The vine maples are just stupid beautiful at this point, and there's been enough moisture to light up the lichens.

It was all the spooky I was looking for: a deep, shady, dripping, overhanging slot canyon; tough to reach; tougher to get out of; a bear trail the length of it. Had to chuck the stick a couple times to have all fours for climbing

Instead, I went out on the Big Lava Bed to explore a big crevice - from shrinkage I think, not a tube - that I paced along the top of back in July, one of the biggest of its kind on the BLB.

Wanted to head up high today, maybe touch some some fresh Indian Heaven snow, but it was just too windy. Though sunny, prolly woulda been brutal.

I'm in Indian Heaven, above Forlorn/Goose, but I can't see it well.

Indian Heaven is shedding its winter coat in a hurry! Reached a favorite place, my Crescent Crater Lake. Last I was here in October, I was kicking through the first layers of the snow melting today, in places still several feet deep. It'll all be gone in days.

I love phloxes!
Merlin says I have a white-crowned sparrow singing behind me. Many robins about, too.
