That's a question you ask to your friends when you've been dumped a million times and still haven't gotten the hint.
Sources: Bari Weiss has complained that CBS News' Standards and Practices team has "too much power" and asked "what's the point of standards?" (Justin Baragona/The Independent)

I wish younger generations who lionize Kurt Cobain knew just how mid Nirvana were compared to pretty much all other bands at the time. I would rather listen to Tad, Earth, or the Melvins before I listen to Nevermind again.

But why? SNAP funding you can still fight for. Public opinion points largely towards blaming Republicans for the shutdown. Why capitulate when there is momentum to force action by the other side — if not now, then soon?
The Senate appeared to be moving toward securing enough support for a bipartisan deal to end the longest government shutdown in history.

The proposal excludes added ACA subsidy funding and still needs House approval and President Trump’s support.
Senate moves toward deal to end shutdown, but hurdles remain
The proposal under discussion doesn’t include more funding for ACA subsidies. If a bill passes the Senate, it needs the House to approve and President Donald Trump on board.

Slack is down but it's past 9pm and that's way sadder to notice this than you think.

One minor take-away from the NYC mayor's race for those concerned with AI/synthetic media and its effects on politics and elections might be that, in this particular instance, the guy who made a malicious deepfake lost and the guy who made authentic videos won.

NEW from me: Mamdani clinched a win in New York City. So why do ring-wing internet figures seem so...gleeful?

MAGA is trying to turn Zohran Mamdani’s win into their gain
New York City’s new mayor enjoyed a meteoric rise to online notoriety. The internet’s talking heads are just getting started.

PSA: Please stop giving advice on spotting the hallmarks of A.I.-generated videos.

Even the pros are are having a hard time. We can't OSINT sleuth our way out of this problem. wapo.st/4ljYzJy
Analysis | How to spot an AI video? LOL, you can’t.
It’s time to stop trying to be AI detectives. We need a different approach to a world awash in realistic AI.

Teen Vogue was one of my favorite pubs over the last decade. I droned on at countless bars and parties to puzzled friends about how their political reporting beat most “traditional” pubs.

When I did something with them at work (as a comms guy), it was a personal milestone.

So yeah. This sucks.
On Teen Vogue: It's an amazing publication full of talented journalists. It offers so much value. It's clear the monied interests in media aren't interested in preserving that value, especially if it threatens the status quo that undergirds their wealth. Capitalism and journalism are enemies.

I feel like the people who really loved Bugonia are also the same people who really love trick candles on someone else’s birthday cake.

Halloween is cool and all, but have you ever cleaned out your basement while listening to Alice Coltrane at an unreasonable volume?

This is basically M'Baku and the Jabari coming down the mountain to help T’Challa, but for progressive New York Jews.
BREAKING: Both Satmar factions decide not to endorse a candidate for mayor and decry the vicious campaign against Mamdani that paints him as hostile to Jews.

In letters to their community members, the Satmar leadership calls the attacks against Mamdani false and dangerous.

This wine bar isn’t like any other wine bar, because at this wine bar, they’re really into RIESLING. The manager has a tattoo that says RIESLING. They constantly suggest RIESLING. And if you order a seltzer with lemon, they will stare into your soul until you CURL UP AND DIE.

I started watching NASCAR recently because I'm not-so-secretly a trash person and it kills time between pro wrestling events.

Tho I'm at that weird intersection of public transit lovers who feel reliance on cars is one of the worst things to happen to this country...but I also love NASCAR?

I'm 2 quarts down and thinking of tapping a third.

It feels pretty off brand to say this as a recovering music snob — I saw Lightning Bolt in a pool once and didn’t shut up about it for ten years — but Justin Bieber released two really good records this year.
