I always wanted to live in the world, see all the places, eat all the food, and pet all the cats. I’m living my dream! Beyond that I’m a historian, love a good game of dnd, playing my trombone, writing, and seeking out new life and new civilizations.
Let 2026 be the year you find your regulated central nervous system. I found mine in Asia. Your mileage will vary, but make it your mantra for next year. Future you will thank you.

Merry Christmas from Otaru, Hokkaido. It is definitely a white Christmas here. It has been many years since I’ve had white Christmas with this much snow on the ground.

Sometimes you just need to make a pot of chili. Made with all Hokkaido ingredients.

That face you make when Google maps tells you to get off the train five stops too early, so you take in the new surroundings while waiting for the next train.

Spreading just a little bit of seasonally appropriate northern hemisphere holiday cheer. 😊

A lovely full moon over the Sea of Japan here in snowy, Otaru, Hokkaido. What a gift to be able see such a thing. I am a lucky man, indeed.

The moon was showing in all her glory last night along the Washington coast. That is when it wasn’t playing peek-a-boo with the atmospheric river that blasted us.

Sunrises in Asia are truly a sight to behold.

Sometimes we need to stop and pamper ourselves along the road of life. Make yourself a priority today!

Having performed here several concerts with the Grays Harbor Community Concert Band, it’s very cool to learn that I’ve performed on same stage where Sousa once conducted a concert on.

There’s a lot of musical talent out here in the harbor.

I haven’t pulled out my heavy winter pea coat since moving to Washington. I chuckled when I found a full pack of cigarettes, a lighter, and cough drops in the pockets. I quit smoking eight years ago in October. Has it really been that long since I last wore this coat? 🤷‍♂️

Meanwhile in Doha…

This might be the best vending machine I have ever seen out in the wild.

Once again, I found myself in need of a haircut while I am out and about in the world. So, I stopped by the local barber close to where I’m staying. Gentlemen, if you want a five star experience, go find an Arab barber. They take their manscaping very serious! Before and after photos, of course.

Meanwhile, at a mall in Thailand. Happy Songkran!

I don’t care what anyone says, if you’re a car nerd, then here’s your car!

Always pick up a local paper. Doubly so if it’s in a language you can read.

Ayutthaya is a different vibe from the suburbs of Bangkok. Life is a little slower here in the old capital of Siam. However, slower does not mean less vibrant. One of my favorite things in Thailand will always be to sit down with a cold beer on the street and watch the people go by. Cheers!

One of my favorite aspects of culture is seeing your culture through the eyes of another. The school I currently work at in Don Mueang had a Christmas celebration a couple of weeks before I arrived. Judging by this display, I'm sad I missed it!

Iced espresso and orange juice coffee. It’s definitely unorthodox by western standards of coffee, but it works.

Eggs. Tables upon tables of eggs at one of the local markets here in Don Mueang. 10 eggs for 37-45 Baht. Converted to US Dollars, that’s $1.10-$1.33. #eggs #eggsofbluesky #eggsoftheworld

You can tell a lot about a society by how the local strays and animals live their lives. Dogs and cats are everywhere. They mind their own business, but enjoy just hanging out on the streets, watching the world go by. They’re just chill. Society here in Thailand is healthy. #dogsoftheworld
