I always wanted to live in the world, see all the places, eat all the food, and pet all the cats. I’m living my dream! Beyond that I’m a historian, love a good game of dnd, playing my trombone, writing, and seeking out new life and new civilizations.
Nobody appreciates how wonderful a heated toilet seat is until you’ve come in from 19 degrees Fahrenheit weather. Thank you. That is all.

Holy shit! I just ate the best burger I’ve ever had in my whole life in Sapporo! If I die tonight, I die knowing there will never be a better one. Ever. And that’s okay.

Let 2026 be the year you find your regulated central nervous system. I found mine in Asia. Your mileage will vary, but make it your mantra for next year. Future you will thank you.

Merry Christmas from Otaru, Hokkaido. It is definitely a white Christmas here. It has been many years since I’ve had white Christmas with this much snow on the ground.

Sometimes you just need to make a pot of chili. Made with all Hokkaido ingredients.

That face you make when Google maps tells you to get off the train five stops too early, so you take in the new surroundings while waiting for the next train.

As I wrap up 2025, I resolve to renew my writing, wrap up my adventures in Thailand...for now, and drop a hint on what's next.
Embracing Change and New Adventures
As I gear up for 2026, I renew my decisions to write more, talk about the start of a new adventure, and wrapping up Thailand...for now.

Spreading just a little bit of seasonally appropriate northern hemisphere holiday cheer. 😊

A lovely full moon over the Sea of Japan here in snowy, Otaru, Hokkaido. What a gift to be able see such a thing. I am a lucky man, indeed.

Everyone is entitled to a bad day. If today is yours, give yourself some grace, space, and a treat.

If it’s someone else’s, give them a hug, and a gentle reminder that it’s okay.

Tomorrow will be better. Promise.

The moon was showing in all her glory last night along the Washington coast. That is when it wasn’t playing peek-a-boo with the atmospheric river that blasted us.

Cultural Transition: My First Night in Don Mueang

Transitioning from the small town to the big city, I reflect on where I am and the small comforts of familiarity.

Old Soviet joke for today:

A man walks into a newsstand every day, looks around, and leaves.

After a long time of this, the owner says “Can I help you find something?”

“I’m looking for the obituaries.”

“The obituaries are in the back of the newspaper, comrade.”

“Not the one I’m looking for.”

Having performed here several concerts with the Grays Harbor Community Concert Band, it’s very cool to learn that I’ve performed on same stage where Sousa once conducted a concert on.

There’s a lot of musical talent out here in the harbor.

You are not just African.

Not just European.

You’re the child of a cultural experiment unlike anything on Earth.

Your ancestors merged here, by trauma or by hope.

Either way, you are the result.

Stop searching for purity

you are the evolution.

I haven’t pulled out my heavy winter pea coat since moving to Washington. I chuckled when I found a full pack of cigarettes, a lighter, and cough drops in the pockets. I quit smoking eight years ago in October. Has it really been that long since I last wore this coat? 🤷‍♂️

Pardon my French. It is pretty rusty. I apologize in advance for any grammatical errors.

A Moment of Reflection
One of my heroes, Rick Steves, offered some insight several years ago that I think is relevant today: "It's good style to get to know people before you bomb them." In light of recent events in the Middle East and the fallout that many of us woke up to this morning, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my travels. Specifically, I want to talk about a stop I made in the Middle East. So, before I begin, I want to make one thing crystal clear. I am not talking about politics or whether any specific course of action(s) recently taken by the current American administration were appropriate.
