When careers depend on numbers, behavior adapts. Researchers optimize for citations, prestige journals, and visibility, favoring trendy or safe work while neglecting slow, risky, or foundational questions that matter but rarely score well.

OTD in 1912, Alfred Wegener delivered a lecture propounding the theory that our modern continents were formed by the splitting and drifting apart of an ancient supercontinent, which he named Pangea.

Due to his failure to offer a plausible mechanism, he was widely ridiculed.

Baseless Skepticism

"When skepticism lacks empirical grounding or logical justification, it ceases to function as a truth-seeking instrument and becomes a performative posture of intellectual superiority."

Every academic discipline eventually hits a wall it can't climb. It’s the moment a system tries to define itself using its own language, leading to a loop that never ends.

Adding or removing states of the universe(s) is really not needed to describe reality, nor could it be the case. #philsci It’s certainly fun to ponder though.
Is there really a possibility we exist in a multiverse? | https://bit.ly/4oVU7Ck

The many-worlds interpretation has long divided physicists. Here, theoretical physicist David Deutsch contends that it’s not merely the best explanation of quantum mechanics, but the only one.

#AI may indeed exacerbate our bad academic habits:

#LLM science summaries were nearly five times more likely than human-authored science summaries to contain broad generalizations (95% CI [3.06, 7.70], p < 0.001).

And newer models over-generalized more; not less!

Method-centered research🧪 is efficient and teachable. That’s why it spreads so well.

But efficiency also invites routinization: running models, software, and protocols without fully engaging with their assumptions or limits.
