Because of [waves hands at the state of the world] there's been a bit of discussion about how difficult it is to sink oil tankers.

As this account firmly approves of the empirical method, ie the boffin lingo for fucking around and finding out, let's look at an example.

Meet Torrey Canyon.

Our little spooky eyes St Agnes horror film - ‘Look, Stranger’ - has been showing in Bristol and Paris this month! Filmed a couple of years ago with lots of giggles and perplexed holidaymakers passing by. Enjoy if you have an idle 4 minutes.

What a beautiful image. And such powerful word choice: ‘the sheer diversity of young lives we serve’ - recognising the individuality of our children and our moral duty to each one of them.
"Every 2 years, we take a whole-school photo. As headteacher, I’m the last piece of the puzzle, standing at the back, looking out across the entire school. And in that moment, it really hits you – the sheer diversity of young lives we serve."

“And yet, the demand to empathise with the boys and men propagating this hatred must surely be exceeded by a justified anger on behalf of the girls and women who are the actual subjects of said hatred. If anything, it is obscene that we women are not more furious and more frightened.”
The Andrew Tate problem
His coarse misogyny is often described as appealing to working-class boys and young men. Is this really the issue?

Such a useful discussion in the thread and comments (the MFL input particularly) about students following the text during teacher read-alouds.
Forgive the quote-post, but this idea comes up often enough that it makes sense for me to write a stand-alone thread on here that addresses this (probably) inaccurate extrapolation of cognitive load theory.

So here's a thread on why asking pupils to follow as a teacher reads probably is fine.

So... a lot of highly successful schools use Reading while Listening (RwL) - the teacher reads aloud while the students follow along, often using a ruler. But this is a clear example of the Split Attention effect - so who is right? readingforlearning.org/2025/02/01/r...
