Not all love stories are about people 💘

Some are about the everyday things we count on — and the science, policy, and public funding that makes them possible.

True love looks like science working for the common good. ✨

Although 500 new NSF GRFPs were added in June, the total number of fellowships in 2025 remains ~500 fewer than in 2024. Some fields—like CS and Physics—still saw net increases in total awards.

But others, including Life Sciences & Psychology, have taken hits of 50% or more compared to last year.

Fields like Computer Science, Physics/Astronomy, and Chemistry saw the largest increases in NSF GRFP awards in 2025.

Meanwhile, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Psychology, and Mathematical Sciences experienced the steepest declines—marking a major departure from historical funding patterns.
June 26, 2025 at 4:32 PM
The initial 2025 NSF GRFP awards largely mirrored historical distributions across scientific fields. However, the 500 additional fellowships announced in June marked a sharp departure—concentrated in emerging tech sectors like AI and CS, with entire disciplines such as life sciences receiving none.

Compared to previous years, the 2025 NSF GRFP awards show a sharp shift in which fields are being funded—breaking from a decade of relatively stable trends.

Here’s a breakdown of the last 10 years of NSF GRFP funding by major field of study:
