I should not have needed the first election of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States to realize that there was something rotten in Christianity as it had been mediated to me. There was already ample testimony to this problem, had I ears to hear it. Nevertheless, this event constituted a dividing line for me and for many of my generation. Whatever way forward we might find vis-à-vis the Christian faith, there was no going back to what we had known before in the form that we had known it.
It would have been easy enough to decide that none of it was ever true and walk away from the charade. Many of my peers did that, “the best minds of my generation destroyed by [the church’s] madness.” Easy as well to determine that those from whom we’d received the faith and who were now throwing in their lot with tyranny, overt white supremacy, misogyny, mockery of the disabled, the valorization of marital infidelity and sexual assault, were simply contradicting the faith. But the problem we face is actually more pernicious than that. Yes, there are indeed contradictions to the values of the faith, but those who supported and support these atrocities do so out of a fidelity to the faith as they’ve received it. What hope is there? This book does not address the American church’s fall into Trumpism, per se. But it is addressed to precisely that question: How can we honestly reckon with the harms of the Christian tradition? And what resources are there to salvage it so that it can take its place as part of the solution?
