Somebody needs to draw a Venn diagram of (fig. a) universities who close their language departments and (fig. b) universities who have the word "global" or "international" in their mission statements, because these people won't understand a thing unless you put it in a powerpoint presentation

Gave a guest lecture today on Bronzeville. It felt good to talk about Chicago for an hour. I need to do more of this.

Touched up a talk for a guest lecture in one of my colleague’s courses and then added material to a massive lecture I’m giving to the first year class. That’s writing right? I’ve been so stuck lately with my own work. Maybe this will get me excited about my NOLA project again.

In about three years the entire university pivot to AI curricula and schools and programs is going to be so deeply embarrassing. We will all pretend it never happened and I will be standing there, looking at people with a mirror in my eyes. This is all so embarrassing.

I was with a panel of people who were all making good arguments about why AI will never replace this or that skill or job, so maybe we'll be okay, and I finally said to one teacher: "you can just say no. you don't have to use it. it steals from people and teaches no skills. it's not a good tool."
