I asked the historian,
who studies the dark times,
how it has come to this
and she replied:
it’s because we have failed
to take care of each other.

So I asked her
if we will get through this
and she replied:
if we do
it will be because we
took care of each other.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Yet if His Majesty, our sovereign lord,
Should of his own accord
Friendly himself invite,
And say 'I'll be your guest to-morrow night,'
How should we stir ourselves?

We entertain Him always like a stranger,
And, as at first, still lodge Him in the manger.

“And truly I was afraid, I was most afraid,
But even so, honoured still more
That he should seek my hospitality
From out the dark door of the secret earth.”

And did you get what you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself beloved on the earth.

“They are all gone into the world of light!
And I alone sit ling’ring here;
Their very memory is fair and bright,
And my sad thoughts doth clear.”

Hers the patience
Of one who made no claims, but simply loved
Because that was her nature, and loving so
Asked no more than to be repaid in kind.
If she was not a saint, I do not know
What saints are…

“I have been young, & now am not too old;
& I have seen the righteous forsaken…
Say what you will, our God sees how they run.
These disillusions are his curious proving
That he loves humanity & will go on loving;
Over them are faith, life, virtue in the sun.”

And to me, though Time's unflinching rigour,
In mindless rote, has ruled from sight
The substance now, one phantom figure
Remains on the slope, as when that night
Saw us alight.

"The stars," he said, "throw well. One can help them."
"I do not collect," I said uncomfortably, the wind beating at my garments. "Neither the living nor the dead. I gave it up a long time ago. Death is the only successful collector."

Yesterday I saw the trees by the river's edge Wrecked and broken beyond belief Only two or three trunks left standing Scarred by blades of a thousand axes Frost strips the yellowing leaves River waves pluck at withered roots This is the way the living must fare Why curse at Heaven & Earth?

Nobody is talking about
the elephant in the room
But who is talking about...
"If you're an elephant, you're in the womb
for like two years or something,
and you come out and you can walk immediately."

What is to be said of someone who flings himself into the Ocean and has no aspiration but to drown himself in it? This is precisely the significance of the so-called "fusion" with a "cosmic consciousness." - René Guénon, The Reign of Quantity (1945)

Once there was blue sky with white clouds high above;
Once they were part of an everlasting love.
We were the lovers who strolled through greenfields.

When the last living thing
Has died on account of us,
How poetical it would be
If Earth could say,
In a voice floating up
Perhaps
From the floor
Of the Grand Canyon,
"It is done."
People did not like it here.

I try to "imaginatively inhabit" the words I read, and see behind them "translucently" as it were. People bring a uniquely embodied sense to what they write, that’s the terroir of the text. It's not about efficiency, but rather the depth and richness of experience.

For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Shade said to Shadow, "At one moment you move, at another you are at rest. Why this instability of purpose?"

"Perhaps I depend," replied Shadow, "upon something which causes me to do as I do; and perhaps that something depends in turn upon something else which causes it to do as it does.”
