Real person, likes to talk about stuff and things. Bit snarky sometimes but tends to regret it afterwards. Bristol / UK, but hardly anyone ever visits.

Now don't you be going and trying out any of these well documented shenanigans that I'm telling y'all about in some considerable detail!

Otherwise all my carefully planned and not-at-all chaotic 'targeted' 'enforcement' 'operations' might be interrupted!
Not exaggerating when I say that the collective action in Minnesota will be studied for generations if not centuries to come

What if the Nobel Peace Prize no longer existed?

Maybe that's part of the price we have to pay to stop Trump? We all stop pretending the peace prize anything more than a stitch up and junk it.

Show up Trump's bellendery for what it is.

Your move Norway!

So how can we reassert democracy as the least worst form of government? What about if we all stand behind our democratic institutions? Especially the ones under attack by authoritarians? Like, I dunno, the BBC?

If it turns out thst Trump's lawsuit isn't a Putin psyop then, well, I'll be damned.

If I say that the new Knives Out is really very good then someone here will tell me that I'm wrong. But I hate that. So instead I shall say that I very much enjoyed it and then I cannot be wrong BECAUSE I JUST DID SO SHUT UP

On what are you basing your disagreement? What, exactly, would you be criticising? What's your purpose? Because in the kindest interpretation of JD's statement, he could end up fighting science with more science, and that might be ok. However...
JD Vance: "Science as practiced in its best form is that if you disagree with it, then you ought to criticize it and you ought to argue against it."

We should consider AI as being like a parasite or a cancer. We have the treatment (starve it of the data and energy we willingly provide it) but we won't because it's also made us crazy.
a close up of a caterpillar on a green leaf with the word wild on the bottom left
Alt: From Wikipedia: Leucochloridium paradoxum is a parasitic flatworm. Its intermediate hosts are land snails. Pictured is the pulsating, green broodsacs of L paradoxum filling the eye stalks of a snail. This visually imitates caterpillars, making the snail look like prey, meaning birds eat infected snails. The adult parasite lives in the bird's cloaca, releasing its eggs into the bird's faeces.

Back in the late 18th century, a number of poor English women organised to seize goods like butter, grain and bread and "redistribute" them. And yes, shoplifting is bad. But some of those women sold the goods on for a fairer price and then handed the takings back to where they took the goods from.

Wise words. See y'all in a week or so!
As someone who has been Extremely Online for more than 25 yrs, whose working life is one long hunt for weak signals/what's next, my advice for folks in the UK who don't really need to be on top of the news on an ongoing basis is to spend some regular time tuning out over the next few days

Yesterday a man was shot dead in front of a crowd of people.

As a result of this crime I now know who this man was and what he preached.

This one gunshot could do more to amplify his message than any social media algorithm could ever do.

And absolutely everything about this situation is rotten.

Ok, so I'm not claiming to have perfect foresight. But I knew Alaska would get involved somehow. And, oh, yes, here comes Russia!
Wonder who Trump thinks would stand up for him now if Russia attacked Alaska across the Bering Strait right now? Because I bet you it would be fucking no-one.

A certain part of society still valorises adults behaving like vile toddlers, enabling these manic, vicious, spoilt, shitty egotists with their unwavering support and zero meaningful consequences.

But I now understand why I want to yell GROW THE FUCK UP whenever any of these Reform types pipe up.

Y'all know that somebody somewhere is making a bunch of money off the back of this EM/DJT spat, and if it turns out they are financially linked with EM and/or DJT I'll not be overly surprised.

The attack on American science is weaponised denialism. Trump is exploiting scientific nuance to his great benefit but to humanity's much greater loss.
I've heard colleagues say that the solution to what's happening to American science is for scientists to communicate the value of science better. That's false. Trump is doing a lot of unpopular things, including destroying the science enterprise. What's happening is not our fault. 1/2
