Oh yeah, Pauper Commander opens up a whole different card pool, with all kinds of weird stuff. Hence Ethersworn Sphinx being one of my favorites. That's not a design you'd see for a legendary.

Finally got all 38 of my Pauper EDH decks organized and packed for Vegas!
Yall don't think I went overboard, do you?
Anyway, come find me at the PDH banner in the command zone or free play areas, and jam some games! Got plenty to loan out, too!

Agreed. I've been staring at Akiri for a while, thinking she could make a great competitive midrange deck. Meanwhile, there's at least tens of different equipment decks that all feel very different to play in mid-power. Some aggro powerhouses, some packing recursion engines, etc

Can't. Too busy building PDH decks.

Some of the highlights from my side games:
-An 18/18 Ivy Elemental
-A brutal game with 2 control decks and 8 edicts removing the voltron player's will to live.
-A burn win by Maverick Thopterist at 1 life.

Some highlights of the tournament games included:
-A strong showing by Arabella
-Cadira killing a player on turn 4
-A 1-shot infect kill
-Spitemare winning a game on turn 6

Had an absolute blast playing Pauper Commander at a new LGS! They had a little 2-round, 13-person tournament, and I got in 3 games on the side, as well. Went 1/1 in the tournament with Ethersworn Sphinx and won 2 of 3 side games.
The tourney was won by a Spitemare combo deck, which was really cool!

Kinda along the same line of thinking, if a deck has a lot of mana rocks that make any color of mana, Protective Sphere becomes a really powerful pillowfort piece that also gets around hexproof.

Yes

Currently assembling 20+ new pauper commander decks to take to Vegas next month. I think once these are done I'll have ~40 PDH decks and ~20 EDH.

I'm more of a Panic Attack kind of guy. The marshmallows have just SEEN fire and still have a white border.

The duel deck art has always been my favorite.
I always connect the alpha art with Flaccify, though 😅

The last interesting part of the deck is the mild grave value package that takes advantage of the ring’s rummaging effect to potentially grind for value later in the game.

After that, there's a suite of evasive or trample creatures that can be your ring-bearer. Combining their evasion or trample with the ring’s skulk makes it easier to get damage through and get ring triggers every turn, burning down the table.

The primary puzzle of the early and mid-game is how to guarantee that you can get rid of your ring bearers, so that you can get tempted again and level up the ring.
Bouncing and sacrificing a ring bearer works, but you can also sometimes get opponents to block and kill an aggressive attacker.

It packs looting, symmetrical burn, skulk, and enough efficient 2- and 3-mana attackers to make you think this is some kind of limited aggro deck. Just looking at that list of effects, I’d never think this was a mono-green deck.

Dúnedain Rangers is odd.
This aggressive mid-range PDH deck aims to get in early chip damage, then pressure everyone's life totals at once with a fully leveled-up ring bearer.

It's got stiff competition from instants. Might be worth it if there's a lot of black or rakdos decks in your meta, but anything with G/W/U will be focusing on hexproof or protection from color, so exiling the creature won't matter as much.

Just have to compare to Marionette Apprentice. Apprentice is cheaper and more offensive, while the new one is more defensive because of the life gain.

I will build hunter just because I wish so badly that it were Vizier.
May 11, 2025 at 2:15 PM
Because the card goes to the grave before going to hand, it triggers Kishla Skimmer and Attuned Hunter, too

Here, these are for you

Yeah, looking forward to jamming this in Gorex.

Can confirm. Both of these commanders are fun in PDH. Looking at Shirei specifically, there's still some good tech available that can do nasty things like repeatable removal and life drain.
May 7, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Yeah, the wording is an odd use of X. I think I like it, though.

I think my PDH fireball tribal idea would be heavy on mana rock ramp, too, since they trigger the commander. Making the 4-cost mana rocks cantrip sounds pretty fantastic.
