“Dobby’s come undone!”
Thank you for this! Child-free; had the pleasure of needing pelvic PT due to the one-two punch of chronic stress & a tailbone fall. I was told my pelvic floor was “through the roof.” Grateful for my gyno who told me stress incont was “common but not normal” & the PT who put me together again.

One final addition: look to LA. They’ve been underwater on this for longer, and Chicago took many cues from how our friends in LA organized. Whistles are a great example of that. @lataco.bsky.social is a solid source of on the ground reporting and solidarity.

And above all, know your neighbors and your neighborhood. Community begins with those you know. Ask your neighbors what they need to feel safe. Something as simple as going for a walk can boost safety for others. You have an advantage feds don’t: you live here, know what looks out of the ordinary.

School and block watches. Trainings are huge: to inform and build community. Know Your Rights and Rapid Response trainings are essential for community safety, Signal & Reddit groups are helpful for tracking activity. Document everything, always use SALUTE method.

There are some great suggestions here. I also recommend starting with existing community and mutual aid groups on the ground who’ve been doing this work, have an established network and established trust with the community. Make it easy for varying levels of participation: whistle kit parties…

Miracle Whip also sponsored a wedding/divorce in the early 2010s so truly, nothing is really new!

Brighton Park, McKinley, Midway. All delightful suburbs 🫠

How might you define “urban core?”

In a time when facts matter even more, getting this right is the bare minimum.

Live in city borders, pay city taxes, receive city services, abide by city laws. Inexcusable. This taking place in the city makes it no less horrific; it might even make it more so.

When I was a young photog at the Daily Illini, Purdue’s student paper let me use their darkroom to develop film and do late selects because the Illinois/Purdue football game ran late and we needed photos for print. No questions asked. They’re real ones over there. Big Ten 🤝

If you can, call Chicago Bird Collision Monitors when you see one (alive or dead!). I’m an occasional volunteer and have picked up many a bird the public’s tucked away for safety ☺️. Very common!

Gah, I sure wish they had a closer grip on the lil’ buddy so it could get the care it needed. Looks like Friday night will be another heavy migration night.

Hell, barely even covers one month worth of my health insurance premium on the ACA.

It varies by so many factors (age, frequency, distance, overall fitness, etc.). The two things that impacted my speed were incorporating consistent longer distance runs and strength training. That combo cut a solid 4 mins off my mile time over the course of 4 months at the age of 39.

I really despised the moment that I discovered those damn gels actually made a difference in training. I can’t undo the knowledge or the taste 🙃

Reading you post through this is an exact reenactment of my listening experience. I was only vaguely aware of Klein prior so listened to Trevor Noah’s recent interview of Klein next and it was night and day. Strikes me as very clear Klein just wants Coates’ approval in the most desperate of ways.

If you live near a VA hospital, they’ll gladly take them. I’ve done this on behalf of my parents (my dad is a vet) so it was a win-win. If you’re not near a VA, any Veteran-associated group would be a worthy consideration.

If I took but one thing from @graceblakeley.substack.com’s wonderful book Vulture Capitalism, it’s that capital (and its holders) will never save you, or me, or anyone, and the time to stop expecting it to is now.

Yes! Or at least I always have done so. Some of them will sink a little bit in there and create some space. Enjoy; it’s a truly great cake.

Just once, I want a journalist to ask him to define “asylum seeker.”

I’ll add onto this as well that Grace Clarke (current head of community at Shopify) was building something similar to create a fully functional AI version of herself. Not sure where it netted out, as I just follow her work on the socials and don’t know her personally.

That theme song lives rent-free in my mind thanks to growing up alongside the show. Thanks for resurfacing; watching that sequence brought it all back.

I would’ve loved to see that question qualified further: important to what or why? Getting a job? Living a secure life? Upward mobility? Being an empathetic person? That would tell a stronger, more nuanced story here as would the overlay of the cost of education and loans along the same time period.

I do wonder if those are programmatic buys based on audience attributes and not specifically bought through LI. It’s an interesting choice for sure.
