After seemingly endless meetings online, meeting in-person is so unbelievably valuable 🤩

Get ready for lots of research from Team Science coming your way 🤝

@distasioval.bsky.social already gave a keynote summarising the state of the art... and there is still so much more to come 👏

It was so good to meet with @equalstrength.bsky.social -researchers to discuss structural discrimination against Black, Muslim, and Roma people, funded by Horizon Europe.

Thank you @stephsteinmetz.bsky.social, @jeremykuhnle.bsky.social and Vasilena Lachkovska for hosting us at UNIL in Lausanne.

Academic life goal achieved: interviewed about my research for Al Jazeera! @aljazeera.com

I discuss research on turnout amongst Muslims, voting for DENK and I bust the myth that Muslims vote for the PVV

The drawing next to the butthole is equally gross.

It says: "visit the Hezbollah Dead Children's Bodies Museum" and "100% Halal" and "here no Jewish children's bodies or black children's bodies from Darfur"

Yeah, sure, whatever, freedom of speech.
June 6, 2025 at 10:08 AM
The butthole drawing says:

"What a girl of Halal has to know" and "how do I enter marriage as a virgin?"

But hey, freedom of speech, right?
June 6, 2025 at 10:08 AM
You might wonder why the Dutch news are interviewing an MP in front of a drawing of a butthole... and a drawing about dead children's bodies.

This is the kind of art the PVV likes to decorate their halls with.

Just your regular reminder that Geert Wilders is a dangerous anti-Muslim Zionist🧵

📢 New publication in the Journal of Populism Studies 🎉

I ask: How do voters assess Muslim women in politics?

I find no differences with Muslim men, but huge differences with non-Muslim politicians.

And is using conjoints/interaction effects a good idea? Full paper here: doi.org/10.55271/JPS...

Now these four can get things done, maybe most of the turmoil is over
June 3, 2025 at 9:54 AM
Now Wilders' PVV left the coalition in the Netherlands, these four political parties can work together to get things done:

GroenLinks/PvdA, VVD, NSC, D66 have a majority of the seats.

My prediction is that Caroline van der Pas' BBB will leave the coalition and take their ministers soon as well.

Marched to the International Court of Justice, Vredespaleis, today for Gaza.

The march was organised by more than 80 organisations and attracted more than 100.000 people.

Biggest demonstration in the Netherlands in 20 years. Now, it is time for action.

But I was the only one with data, I know the NKO would also have data, but that would take a while to analyse. My data was slightly older, but how much can change?

So I posted this histogram to Twitter:

In the Netherlands, in-group favouritism is less pronounced, but still significant. Just as feelings of non-belonging explain voting for PRRP PVV, just as (anti-)immigration attitudes and (not) taxing the rich.
February 11, 2025 at 4:31 PM
In Germany, in-group favouritism also explained voting for PRRPs more than immigration attitudes. Germany stands out as the only countries where Christian in-group favouritism also explains voting for their PRRP AfD considerably, that isn't the case in France and the Netherlands.
February 11, 2025 at 4:31 PM
For Muslim minorities, in-group favouritism (of a lack thereof) didn't predict voting for PRRPs much. But for majorities... oh boy it did! In France, Germany and the Netherlands it sure did explain voting for PRRPs. In France, even marginally more so than the classic explainer immigration attitudes.
February 11, 2025 at 4:31 PM
I also looked at how much in-group favouritism mattered, measured through a list of four tried and tested items. Ethnic minorities favour their in-group to a much lower extent than majorities, i.e. citizens without a migration background. Muslim and Christian in-group favouritism was similar
February 11, 2025 at 4:31 PM
I focussed on Muslim minorities of France, Germany and the Netherlands and tried to explain why they vote for PRRPs. In France, attachment seemed to matter. In Germany, views on social benefits and Islam mattered a bit. Netherlands: immigration and Islam. None of the results were very persuasive.
February 11, 2025 at 4:31 PM
In the Netherlands, this is very different. Muslim minorities are much less likely to vote for the Dutch Partij voor de Vrijheid, headed by Geert Wilders, than their Dutch majority counterparts, measured as those without a migration background.
February 11, 2025 at 4:31 PM
In France and Germany, almost all minority ethnic groups are just as likely to vote for RN as their majority counterparts, except for French voters with a background in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This was so much fun. But don't think I always look this amazing, dear followers. The Nieuwsuur make-up team had two people working on my hair and make-up at the same time. I hadn't worn make-up since... getting married years ago. Usually, I'm a total slob, really.
November 8, 2024 at 8:49 PM
With the support from my very own Doug Emhoff in the background, here I am talking to Jeroen Wollaars from Nieuwsuur about race and gender in voting.

Read about the research I discussed here:

What a ride! I successfully defended my dissertation "Minority voting and Representation"

There are so many people to thank! My supervisors, my colleagues, my friends and family. All the people who came to the defence, I've never seen the UvA Agnietenkapel so full. I don't know where to start.
