Ahem
The Trois Domaines produced a reassuringly cheap rosé wine labelled “La Hune”. After checking that it was drinkable, I bought several bottles to present to visitors next year in a deliberate pretence that somehow or other it is our own product.

1. One thing you need to realise about the British Establishment is that it uses clowns to express its deepest desires. People like Rod Liddle offer a kind of deniability - "lighten up, he's just having a laugh". But they deliver a closer representation of its truths than any sober editorial.

2. They all chortle along, and then suddenly they mean it. This is what we saw when Boris Johnson became Prime Minister. It was still all one big laugh - cheer up, he isn't serious - then 200,000 people were dead with Covid.

It was a vote for peace, unity and shared purpose.

I tried to take daylight pictures of the ghosts in the woods nearer the village and spent some time talking about the ghosts with the local priest, who thought I was mad.

MPs lined up to label Britain’s exit from the European Union a “disaster” in a House of Commons debate on Monday evening. Labour MP Stella Creasy vowed at the outset of her speech to speak plainly about the impact of Brexit, which she rubbished as “a disaster by anybody’s metric.” In one of several swipes... Read more »
