The moon was high in the sky by the time Merlin’s horse stilled. The woods were less dense, and amongst the trees was a small wooden cabin. The windows were dark, and there was no smoke coming out of the chimney. There were even cobwebs in the corners of the windows. It looked utterly deserted. “Here we are,” Merlin declared. “This is your home?” Arthur asked, dubious. “What else would it be? Come on.”

My MC is Noemi (Noe for short). She grew up in the poorer district of the Abyss and became a seamstress' apprentice, eventually catching the eye of the king. Now she wants to earn being queen to be his equal but people keep getting in her way!

“If you wish to bathe, you can do so in the lake,” Merlin told him, handing him the basket. Inside it was soap, a scrub brush, and some folded linens. “It’s not too deep, but the water is dark. So don’t be alarmed if you can’t see to the bottom.” He wasn’t making eye contact with him, instead focusing on the contents of the basket. A sudden, awful idea blossomed in Arthur’s head. “That sounds somewhat perilous,” he said. “Perhaps you should join me, just in case.” Merlin raised an eyebrow. “You should be perfectly fine on your own.” “But aren’t I weak because of the poisoning?” “Not that weak. Get moving.” “Or what?” “Or you’ll be dirty, it’s hardly my business,” Merlin muttered, turning away.

Noe focuses on her own armour and clothes, and tries not to divert her attention to Sybel. It’s not polite, for one thing. The baths as a concept have certain unspoken rules, and one is certainly no staring. But that becomes especially difficult when the spring water barely goes past Sybel’s waist, and she’s just standing there facing Noe, waiting for her to join. She turns her back to strip off her remaining clothes, then unties her braid. Her hair untied is long enough to cover most of her, but she refrains from draping it accordingly. She’ll never beat the assumption that she’s shy, otherwise. She lets her hair fall against her back and slips into the nearest spring. The shock of heat sends a shiver down her spine, but she grows accustomed to it as she paddles her way towards Sybel. It never takes her long to adjust now. “I don’t know how you do it,” Sybel remarks, wincing. “It’s so hot.” “You get used to it.”

Sybel’s eyes linger on her as she excuses herself. In her gaze is a silent question Noe can’t answer. Not here, not under the prying eyes of her husband and his mother. She can’t possible ask if Sybel’s invitation still stands, despite the turn dinner has taken. Hopefully, she will understand.

She forces a smile from her lips and says, as evenly as she can manage, “Oh? What’s after dinner?” “Come and see,” Sybel says with a mischievous smile. She reaches over to tuck a strand of hair behind Noe’s ear, letting her fingers linger against its crest. “If you don’t want Aleta to know, just go to the gardens first. Then, come back to my rooms. I swear, she sees everything. It’s annoying, isn’t it?” Speechless, Noe nods. Her heart is beating so fast. “I don’t know how you put up with it all this time,” Sybel continues. “I cannot—Ah, it’s not wise to speak ill of people. Do tell me you’ll come?” Noe clears her throat. Suddenly, she’s parched. “I’ll see.” Sybel grins again. “See you later, then.”

Kissing Sybel is not that different from kissing Demetrius, at least not on the surface. They both have lips, they both smell like similar perfumes and soaps. But everything about it is so completely, fundamentally different. She cannot even begin to describe it. For once in her life, she feels completely unrestrained, completely present. Her mind is focused, not wandering as it so often does. She commands every touch.

“How’re you feeling?” Sybel asks. “Sore?” “Just a little.” “It’ll be worse tomorrow,” she warns. “I can try to help?” Her heart does a strange flip, but Noe nods. It would be rude to refuse the queen, of course, and she imagines Sybel has a good idea of what she’s doing. They were probably all giving each other massages at Tanzanite House. The heat rises on her face as she stands to face Sybel. She turns around and swings her hair over one shoulder. Sybel brushes a chunk of hair she didn’t gather out of the way, placing it gently over Noe’s shoulder. “Your hair’s so long and nice,” she praises, lightly combing her fingers through it. “I never could grow it out before. Do you think I should?” She clears her throat. She doesn’t have an opinion on how Sybel should do her hair. It makes no sense for her to. But she finds herself responding by saying, “I like how it is now.” Sybel laughs softly. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

Sybel reaches for her hand to examine herself. She lifts it up, but doesn’t disturb the bandage. She merely opens Noe’s fingers to have a closer look. Then, without warning or explanation, she presses her lips against the gauze. “Sorry for that.” Noe opens her mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. All she can manage is a quick bow before turning her heel to return to her room.

“Ah, sorry,” Sybel exclaims, adjusting the robe with a sigh. “They’re still finding me proper clothes—mine were soaked through. I do hope they can retrieve my belongings soon. Anyhow, you’re not here to listen to me ramble. I asked you here for a reason.” Noe nods, her throat dry. “I know you’re the king’s wife,” she says, “and I just want you to know that I don’t want to come between you two. I wanted to be queen for my own reasons. But I want us to be allies. If there’s anything you wish to see done, just let me know. I’ll do what I can. I know you’re like me—we weren’t born from nobility. So we may share the same goal.” She nods again. Her words are amiable and non-confrontational on the surface, but they still leave a sour taste in her mouth. How patronizing. Like she’d ever ask Sybel for anything! Still, she has no reason to invoke her wrath. Aleta’s dislike of her was bad enough. Sybel could do real damage if she wanted to. She’s certainly pretty enough to seduce Demetrius. She has to keep a close eye on her. Make her think she’s won, and that Noe is a willing ally. Make her think nothing is wrong. “I had a good time fighting you,” Sybel continues. “We should spar sometime. How are your hands?” Noe gulps. “They’ll heal.”
